Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
BILOXI, Miss. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (12-13) fell to the Biloxi Shuckers (16-10) by a 2-1 score in the first game of the five-game series at MGM Park on Wednesday night.
Biloxi right-handed starting pitcher Thomas Jankins (5-0) earned the win, tossing six and a third scoreless innings where he allowed three hits, walked two batters, and struck out four. Jacksonville right-handed starter Nick Neidert (2-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and a season-high six strikeouts in seven innings of work. Biloxi right-handed reliever Nate Griep earned his league-best ninth save of the season by working the ninth inning, despite allowing a run.
After the first three innings were scoreless, Biloxi got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run by Milwaukee Brewers catcher Stephen Vogt, with the Shuckers on a major league rehab assignment, to put the Shuckers ahead 1-0. Biloxi added to the lead later in the inning with an RBI single by Jake Hager to lead 2-0.
After Griep walked Monte Harrison and John Norwood to start the ninth, Eric Jagielo drove in Harrison with an RBI single to put Jacksonville on the board at 2-1. With the bases loaded and one out in the ninth, Rodrigo Vigil popped out in foul ground to first baseman Jake Gatewood for the inning's second out. The next batter Chris Diaz flew out to deep right to end the game in a 2-1 loss.
Jacksonville has not won a series opener on the road so far in four trips in 2018.
John Norwood drew a walk in the seventh inning to extend his consecutive game on-base streak to 20 games, which is the longest active on-base streak in the Southern League.
The Jumbo Shrimp and Shuckers will continue their series with the second game of the five-game set tomorrow night at MGM Park at 7:35 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Pablo Lopez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Biloxi right-handed starter Angel Ventura (0-1, 4.50 ERA).
