Portland Sea Dogs News Release

ANOTHER ONE - The Sea Dogs outlasted the Yard Goats 7-6 on Friday at Dunkin' Donuts Park. The scoring started when two runs came around to score in the top of the first frame for the Sea Dogs. With one out, Ceddanne Rafaela hit a solo homer to give Portland a 1-0 lead. Stephen Scott was next up, and made it back-to-back homers, increasing the Sea Dogs advantage to 2-0. Hartford responded with a run in the bottom of the first. Hunter Stovall collected a one-out single and Grant Lavigne walked. Michael Toglia grounded into a force-out, putting runners at the corners. Toglia stole second, and a wild pitch from Portland starter Dylan Spacke brought in Stovall, cutting into the Sea Dogs lead 2-1. Portland scored three more in the second inning, headlined by a Wil Dalton two-run homer and a Rafaela RBI single, bringing the score to 5-1. The Yard Goats entered the scoring column again in the bottom of the fourth. Kyle Datres doubled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Sea Dogs reliever Matt Barnes. Willie McIver walked, and Isaac Collins hit into an RBI groundout, scoring Datres to make it a 5-2 game. The momentum rolled into the bottom of the fifth inning, where Hartford drove in two more runs. Stovall led off the inning with a base hit and Lavigne doubled, moving both runners into scoring position. One out later, Aaron Schunk reached on an infield single, bringing in Stovall and the Yard Goats trailed 5-3. Brenton Doyle brought them one run closer with a second-straight RBI base hit, making it a one-run deficit for Hartford, 5-4. The Sea Dogs scored their first runs since the second inning in the top of the sixth. Dearden led off with a walk and Dalton lined a two-run shot over the wall in left. It was Dalton's sixth long ball of the year and gave the Sea Dogs a 7-4 advantage. The Yard Goats brought the score closer in the bottom of the seventh. Lavigne and Toglia led off the inning with base hits. Schunk grounded a single into right, bringing in Lavigne and the score was 7-5. Datres collected his second RBI single later in the inning, bringing the Yard Goats within a run, 7-6. Oddanier Mosqueda and Joan Martinez combined for a scoreless final 2.0 innings, securing a 7-6 win for the Sea Dogs.

MULTI-HIT HEROES - In Friday's win over Hartford, Ceddanne Rafaela, Tyler Dearden, and Wil Dalton collected multi-hit games. The Sea Dogs as a team had 10 hits on the night, but eight of those 10 hits came from these three players. Rafaela had four hits, while Dearden and Dalton both had two. Rafaela now has 12 multi-hit games this year. Dearden has reached double-digits, getting multiple hits for the 10th time this year, and Dalton has now garnered multiple hits in six games.

THE MORE THE MERRIER - With a 4-for-4 line last night, Ceddanne Rafaela ended up reaching base five times against the Yard Goats. All-in-all, Rafaela fell short of the cycle by just a triple, but had a double, home run, and two singles, while driving in two RBI and walking once. This is also the second with the Sea Dogs this season that Rafaela has had a four-hit game. The last time came on June 10 against Hartford, where he started at shortstop for his fourth ever Double-A game.

PADDING THE LEAD - The three-game winning streak for the Sea Dogs in Hartford this week has put them solely in the lead of the Northeast Division. Portland sits 2.0 games in front of the Somerset Patriots (15-10) and 2.5 games ahead of the Hartford Yard Goats (14-10). The Sea Dogs can thank their success on the road for lengthening their league, as they have added three away wins this week, improving their record away from Hadlock Field to 10-3, two more wins on the road than any other Eastern League team.

THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - July 30, 2007 - Charlie Zink allowed a franchise record 12 earned runs in Portland's 20-13 loss to Connecticut at Hadlock Field.

PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Brian Van Belle is set to make his seventh Double-A start of the season against the Yard Goats on Saturday. July has been a successful month for the right-hander, posting a 2-1 record and a 3.27 ERA over four starts this month. Over this span, he also had his two longest outings this year, tossing 6.0 innings on July 4 and 7.0 innings on July 10, both against Binghamton with both resulting in wins. Van Belle's most recent start came in New Hampshire against the Fisher Cats, where he finished 4.0 innings while allowing three runs on six hits, walking one, and striking out two.
