Altoona Curve News Release
BOWIE, Md. - Altoona's starter Quinn Priester went a season-long 6.1 innings but it was not enough for the win as Altoona managed just one run and fell to Bowie, 2-1, at Prince George's Stadium on Saturday night.
It was the second time Priester completed six innings this season for Altoona. He allowed two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. After allowing a lead-off double to pinch-hitter J.D. Mundy in the bottom of the third, Priester worked a groundout before Shayne Fontana singled to advance the baserunner to third. Joseph Ortiz then sent what seemed like an inning-ending double-play ball to third, but Liover Peguero could not deliver an on-target throw to first as a run scored and Ortiz advanced to second on the error.
The Curve brought a run across to tie the game in the top of the fourth. Blake Sabol led off the frame with a double off Bowie starter Garrett Stallings. Sabol advanced to third on a groundout by Aaron Shackelford before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Fabricio Macias.
Maverick Handley knocked a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth off Priester to give the Baysox the 2-1 lead, a score that would last across the final five frames.
The Curve brought the go-ahead runner to the plate with one out in the ninth inning when Peguero was hit by a pitch, but Connor Scott bounced into a double play to end the game.
Colin Selby struck out four batters, including punching out the side in the eighth, over 1.2 innings in relief for the Curve. It was the third appearance for Selby since returning from the injured list last week.
Sabol went 3-for-4 in the outing with two doubles, his fourth three-hit game of the season. Altoona falls to 1-4 on the week in Bowie and 2-6 on the road trip in the loss.
The Curve finish their series with Bowie on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. RHP Carmen Mlodzinski takes the ball for Altoona, the Baysox will start RHP Justin Armbruester.
