JOLIET SLAMMERS (35-26) @ LAKE ERIE CRUSHERS (28-33)

Friday, July 29 - 6:05 p.m. CT

All Pro Freight Stadium - Avon, OH

Game #62 - Road Game #33 (35-26, 17-15)

RHP #33 JAKE RENSHAW (6-4, 3.59 ERA) vs. LHP #28 RANDY STURGILL (4-0, 2.73 ERA)

Last Time Out...

The Joliet Slammers (35-26) smacked four home runs and got a strong performance from Tommy Mendoza (3-1) on their way to an 8-2 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers (28-33) Thursday night. A three-run home run from Kyle Maunus gave Joliet a 3-0 advantage in the fourth. Bobby Leeper hit a lead-off homer in the fifth and Erik Lis crushed his team leading 13th homer of the season the same inning to make it 6-0 Slammers. Meanwhile Mendoza went seven innings, scattering five hits, giving up two runs (on a home run), walking one and striking out six. Josh Flores completed the scoring with a two-run shot in the ninth for his fourth homer of the year. With the win the Slammers remained 1/2 game up on the Windy City ThunderBolts in the East Division of the Frontier League. It's their second straight win and they've won six out of their last ten.

For Starters...

"Captain" Jake Renshaw leads the Slammers in Wins but is coming off a tough luck loss against the Traverse City Beach Bums on July 24. Renshaw pitched really well but gave up some runs late as the Slammers lost 4-1. He's faced Lake Erie once before and got a no-decision as he went six innings, giving up three runs on six hits. Renshaw was a 10th round draft pick out of Ventura College by the Chicago Cubs in 2006. He was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 26th round in 2004 but did not sign. Renshaw spent two years with the Cubs organization and pitched two years at the high-A level with the Orioles organization. The 25-year old right hander put up excellent numbers last year in the Golden Baseball league as he posted a 2.39 ERA in 16 appearances.

Playing the long ball...

It took the Slammers 10 games to reach eight home runs on the year. They've hit eight home runs over their last two games. The four home runs on Wednesday was a season high and they matched it last night. Plus, Kyle Maunus, Bobby Leeper, and Erik Lis have all hit home runs in consecutive games.

#Winning...

With their win last night the Slammers have set a new season best of nine games over .500 despite not winning more than three consecutive games all year. On the flip side they have not lost more than three straight games either.

Going for the sweep...

With a win tonight the Slammers would have their second road sweep of the year and fourth overall.

Holding on...

The Slammers have been in first place by themselves every day since the end of play on July 8. They had not held first place by themselves at all before then.

Leading after six...

The Slammers are almost unbeatable with a record of 25-1 when leading after six innings.

The team triple crown...

Erik Lis leads the Slammers in batting average (.316), Home Runs (13) and RBI (52).

July is hot...

The Slammers are 16-8 in July, the second best record in the Frontier League behind only the River City Rascals (18-5).

Pitching is the key...

The Slammers have the best team ERA in the East Division at 3.68. The bullpen has been especially good, compiling an ERA of 2.79. In addition they've held opponents to a Frontier League low batting average of .238.
