Tuesday, July 24 - 6:05 p.m. CT

Game #60 - Road Game #27 (25-34), (13-13)

Last time out...

The Slammers beat the Beach Bums in 10 innings Monday night. Joliet fell behind 3-0 in the first. With the bases loaded and one out, Jeff Flagg slapped a single to make it 2-0, and Kyle Colligan then lifted a sacrifice fly into the outfield for a three-run lead. Joliet made their move in the fifth inning. With two aboard, Abel Nieves doubled to cut the lead to one. In the seventh, Nieves doubled to bring around David Fox, tying the game at 3-3. The teams stayed tied through the first nine, but the Slammers came through in the 10th. With two on and two out, Kyle Maunus came through in the clutch with the game-winning single, giving the game the 5-3 final score. Jim Schult gave up three runs through five innings, while Chase Doremus, Daniel Carela, Geoff Brown, Mike Barsotti, and Amalio Diaz teamed up in relief. Barsotti earned his first professional win in the outing.

For Starters...

Steven Maxwell's only start this season against Traverse City was a memorable one as he went seven shutout innings on May 24, giving up three hits while walking three and striking out 10 in a 4-1 Joliet victory. Maxwell has received very little run support in his six losses this season. Joliet is averaging only 2.3 runs per game in Maxwell's six defeats. The right-hander has lost four of his last five starts with his last win coming on July 8 against Normal. Maxwell put up outstanding numbers at Division One powerhouse Texas Christian University and got drafted twice, once by the Minnesota Twins, and once by the Chicago Cubs. Maxwell's junior season at TCU saw him tally an 11-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. Maxwell tossed 103.1 innings that season and struck out 93 batters while only walking 34 in 18 starts. He was a 2010 2nd-team Louisville Slugger all-American, the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, a 2010 1st-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, a 2010 ABCA 2nd-team All-Midwest Region selection and he made the 2010 NCAA Fort Worth Regional All-Tournament Team. His pitching helped lead TCU to the College World Series. Maxwell was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the 2010 draft but elected to return to TCU for his senior season. Injuries shortened Maxwell's senior campaign but the right-hander still went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts. He was named to the All-Mountain West 2nd Team at the end of the season. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with a 21-5 record and a 3.43 ERA. He was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2011 draft.
