Miners Belt Homers in Extra's for Win

Normal, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners defeated the Normal CornBelters 10-8 in 11 innings at the Corn Crib. Miners designated hitter Ken Gregory hit a solo home run off CornBelters reliever Josh Joseph to give the Miners a 9-8 lead after the CornBelters scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie it at 8. Alvaro Ramirez hit a solo home run of Joseph with one out in the eleventh inning to add insurance for the Miners.

The Miners took an early 1-0 lead off CornBelters starter Tyler Stovall when Darian Sandford scored a run on a throwing error by catcher Trey Manz at third base. Sandford stole two bases in the inning to set up the first lead of the game for the Miners. The CornBelters tied the game in the bottom of the first off Miners starter Cody Hall as CornBelters center fielder Tyler Wiesemeyer hit a solo home run to make it 1-1.

The CornBelters added two more runs off Hall in the bottom of the third inning as designated hitter Sam Judah hit a RBI double and third baseman Andrew Cohn added a sacrifice fly to give the CornBelters a 3-1 lead. Cody Hall left the game after four innings. He gave up four hits, three runs, walked four batters and struck out one batter. The Miners came within one run in the top of the fifth inning when Alvaro Ramirez grounded into a fielder's choice to bring in Chad Maddox who led off the inning with a walk to make it 3-2.

The Miners opened up the game in the top of the seventh inning as they scored three runs off CornBelters relievers Kyle DiMartino and Rich Mascheri. With runners on first and third with one out, Ken Gregory grounded out to first to tie the game at 3-3. Will Block hit a RBI double with two outs to make it a 5-3 game. The Miners added another run in the top of the eighth inning as Darian Sandford stole two more bases and scored on a wild pitch to give the Miners a 6-3 lead. The Corn Belters made it a 6-4 game as Norberto Susini grounded out to short to bring in Tyler Wiesemeyer who tripled off Gabriel Shaw to begin the inning.

The Miners scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning as Will Block hit a sacrifice fly off CornBelters reliever Rich Ruff and Alvaro Ramirez brought in a run to give the Miners a 8-4 lead in the top of the ninth inning.

The Miners sent out reliever Anthony Collazo to start the bottom of the ninth inning but he gave up a hit and a walk and was pulled after two batters. Albert Ayala came out of the bullpen but gave up back to back hits by Trey Manz and Bobby Rinard. Rinard's single allowed two runs to score and a wild pitch allowed Sam Judah to come in from third base to score. Andrew Cohn grounded out to second base to bring the CornBelters within one run 8-7. Tyler Wiesemeyer hit an infield single to seocnd base tie the game at eight and send it to extra innings.

The Miners scored two runs in the top of the eleventh inning off Corn Belters reliever Josh Joseph on solo home runs by Ken Gregory and Alvaro Ramirez to give the Miners a 10-8 lead. Ross Davis pitched two innings in relief to earn his first win of the season. With the win, the Miners improve to 36-24 on the season and trail the Traverse City Beach Bums by two games in the Eastern Division.

The Miners begin a three game set tomorrow against the Evansville Otters at Bosse Field. First pitch will get underway at 6:35 pm. The Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show with Mike Ventola on the Miners Radio Network will get underway at 6:15 pm.
