Portland Sea Dogs News Release
BOMBS AWAY - The Portland Sea Dogs hit three home runs in the first two innings on their way to a 9-3 victory over the Reading Fightin Phils on Tuesday night. Triston Casas connected for his first home run since May in the top of the first inning with a two-run blast to put the Sea Dogs ahead, 2-0. In the second inning, Pedro Castellanos hit his ninth homer of the season then was followed up by Joey Meneses with a solo shot two batters later. The most home runs the Sea Dogs have hit in a game is 5 on May 12 at Dunkin' Donuts Park in Hartford. Portland has now won a season-high eight-straight games.
FOLLOW THE RULES - An experimental new rule took effect last night as we begin the second half of the season. Infielders will still be required to be positioned on the infield; however, they will need to be in position when the pitcher is on the rubber (as opposed to when the pitch is released). Additionally, two infielders are required to be on each side of second base when the pitch is released.
BLAIR EARNS THE PROMOTION - Seth Blair was promoted to AAA-Worcester earlier today. The right-handed pitcher leaves the Sea Dogs with a 0-1 record and 2.12 ERA. He appeared in 15 games and tossed 17.0 innings allowing four earned runs on 9 hits while walking four and striking out 21. He pitched last night in Reading and tossed a scoreless ninth inning allowing one hit while striking out two.
WINNING STREAK CONTINUES - The Sea Dogs are currently riding their longest winning steak since August 15-25, 2014. Since 2014, Portland has not won more than five-straight games. During the streak, the Sea Dogs lead all of Double-A in batting average with .318. They have also recorded 15 doubles, one triple and 10 home runs. On the mound, Portland is limiting opposing teams to a 3.00 ERA (21 earned runs on 56 hits). In 66.0 innings, Sea Dogs pitchers have struck out 71 while walking 13.
WHERE DO WE STAND - The Sea Dogs are currently in second place in the Northeast League and are gaining on the first place Somerset Patriots. Portland is 3.0 games out of first place and are well within the playoff hunt as we begin the second half of the season.
MATTHEW KENT DOES NOT ISSUE FREE PASSES - Lefty reliever Matthew Kent has not issued a walk since 6/6. During that time he has pitched 22.0 innings allowing 14 runs (eight earned) on 27 hits while striking out 14. He has limited opponents to a .278 batting average.
ON THE MOUND - LHP Enmnauel De Jesus makes first start tonight since 6/27 versus the Somerset Patriots. De Jesus has made two relief appearances in that time on 7/4 at New Hampshire and 7/8 against Hartford at Hadlock Field. In his last start against the Patriots he tossed 3.2 shutout innings allowing 3 hits while walking one and striking out four.
