Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
SANTA CRUZ, CA - Golden State Warriors forward Juan Toscano-Anderson has been awarded the 2019-20 NBA G League Community Assist Award presented by Kaiser Permanente for his continued commitment to positively impacting the lives of children and families throughout the 2019-20 season, the league announced today. Toscano-Anderson, who is currently under a Two-Way contract with the Warriors and spent the majority of the 2019-20 season in Santa Cruz, is the first ever recipient of the award.
Toscano-Anderson will be presented with the award during a special virtual ceremony with league, Kaiser Permanente, and Warriors officials this week. In addition, Kaiser Permanente and the NBA will donate $10,000 on his behalf to the 100% College Prep Institute, a San Francisco-based non-profit that Toscano-Anderson credits with benefiting several of his friends through their programming and the opportunities they provide for underprivileged black youth.
"Juan exemplifies what it means to give one's all, on and off the court," said Santa Cruz Warriors President Chris Murphy. "The entire Santa Cruz community is so proud of Juan and looks forward to seeing him continue his community efforts for many seasons to come."
Toscano-Anderson participated in multiple Read to Achieve and Math Warriors events at local schools, spoke to more than 300 students in Santa Cruz about the importance of education, and addressed over 2,000 people in Spanish at the DÃÂa De Los Muertos Film Festival in Watsonville. He also supported Digital Nest, a local non-profit focused on empowering Latinx professionals, during a live Q&A in which he discussed his childhood, basketball career and the pride he felt in playing with the Mexican National Team.
Toscano-Anderson also hosted many community events on his own over the course of the 2019-20 season. He donated a Thanksgiving meal to a local Santa Cruz family, surprised three young men with new shoes for Christmas at the Oakland Youth Development Center, hosted Youth Basketball Clinics in Monterrey, Mexico, and led two Walk in Unity events in Oakland, bringing people together to combat oppression, police brutality and social injustice.
