SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League (CHL) and the Clark Beverage Group of Southaven recently provided a check in the amount of $3,925 to the Jr. StreetKings youth roller hockey program, a part of Hernando Youth Sports.
The check equals half of the proceeds from a season-ending auction of the Miller Lite warm-up jerseys worn by the RiverKings. The jerseys were worn during pre-game warm-ups prior to each home game of the 2009-2010 RiverKings' season.
Clark Beverage Group, a local distributor with offices in Southaven, sponsored the jerseys that were auctioned off. The Jr. StreetKings program receives part of its funding from all jersey auctions done by the RiverKings during the course of the team's regular season.
RiverKings captain and director of the Jr. StreetKings program Derek Landmesser says this will be a great boost for the program. "All the money we get from sponsors helps upgrade the facility and make it a better experience for the kids," Landmesser said. "We are registering kids now for the spring leagues, which start play on May 3rd. Plus, we can provide more services to the public, like open skating."
Landmesser went on to express his thanks for the support of Clark Beverage Group, noting that they and Miller Lite have been great backers of the program for several years.
The Jr. StreetKings provides a skating and hockey experience to youngsters ranging in age from four to 14 during the spring and summer months at the Hernando Civic Center covered rink facility.
Participants are taught skating and hockey skill fundamentals while having a fun time and learning life skills at the same time.
Skill evaluations for the spring leagues will be done on May 1st with the first practices set for May 3rd. Games begin on May 10th and will continue through the championship games on June 19th.
Roller blade rental and arena time at the Hernando facility is also available for public use by pre-arrangement with Landmesser by calling him at 901-870-7825.
