Ottawa Renegades News Release
OTTAWA - For the second time in this young 2005 Canadian Football League season, Ottawa Renegades quarterback Kerry Joseph has been named the Rogers-CFL Offensive Player of the Week.
Joseph anchored a solid Renegades second half performance in the team's pivotal 28-12 division win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last Saturday. The 31-year-old starting pivot went 20-of-27 for 340 yards and three passing touchdowns to lead Ottawa to its second consecutive road victory - the first time the club has achieved that feat in franchise history.
Joseph, the top rusher among quarterbacks in the CFL (55 carries for 374 yards and four touchdowns), also scrambled seven times for 85 yards and was part of a Renegades offence that did not commit a turnover in the win over Hamilton.
"Kerry is the key to our offence," said Renegades head coach and general manager Joe Paopao. "We are playing pretty good football right now and one of the main reasons for our (4-3) record is due to his play. We are happy for Kerry -- and for the whole offence -- to receive this honour from the league."
Joseph, the third leading passer in the CFL, has thrown for 1,839 yards this season, completing 132 of 209 passes (63.2 per cent) and has an efficiency rating of 93.4. He has tossed for 10 touchdowns, compared to seven interceptions.
"In the second half (against Hamilton), Joseph came out firing bullets," said Bob Crouse, a league judge who decides on the weekly CFL honours. "If the receivers were not open or there was pressure on him, Joseph took off and ran like a big halfback."
Joseph last won the award on July 5 - four days after the Renegades' Canada Day win over the Montreal Alouettes.
Ottawa returns to action on home turf Thursday, August 11 for a Week 8 affair against the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Frank Clair Stadium. Tickets are available either at the Renegades ticket office (1015 Bank Street), on the Internet (http://www.capitaltickets.ca), by phone (613.599.3267 or 877.788.3267), any Sports Experts location in the Ottawa and Gatineau regions as well as the Corel Centre Box Office in Kanata.
