Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - The West Michigan Whitecaps came to Beloit and took the first game of the three-game series 5-2 Saturday night at Pohlman Field. West Michigan's Clay Jones led the way with a 2-for-4 performance including a home run and a double. The Snapper' s had a crowd of 2,076 that enjoyed the eighth fireworks show of the season.
After trading scoreless first and second innings, the Snappers (12-10) jumped on top in the third inning thanks to an RBI single from Wang-Wei Lin to score Daniel Santana. They'd tack on another run to make it 2-0 when Lance Ray and Daniel Ortiz smoked back-to-back doubles off of Whitecap starting pitcher Josue Carreno.
The lead wouldn't last long as Beloit starter Manuel Soliman ran into trouble in the fifth inning, allowing four runs on four hits to the Whitecaps, who took the 4-2 lead and never looked back. Jones would hit his third home run of the year in the sixth inning and would later send Soliman to the showers, suffering his sixth loss of the season (4-6, 3.89 ERA).
Daniel Ortiz would lead the Snappers offense by collecting two hits (2-for-3), including his 26th double of the season, which puts him second in the Midwest League. It was his second multi-hit game in a row as he was 2-for-4 last night in a loss to the South Bend Silver Hawks. Ortiz looks to return to his form in April, when he hit .377. His season average is up to .261.
The "Brodie Trophy Player of the Game," goes to recent addition to the bullpen Sam Spangler, who pitched two shutout innings in the seventh and eighth innings to keep the Snappers in the ballgame. Since being called up from Elizabethton, he's thrown a total of three scoreless innings.
Tomorrow, the Snappers and Whitecaps continue their three-game series at 2:00pm. A.J. Achter will start for the Snappers against Brian Flynn for the Whitecaps. The first 500 fans through the gates will receive a Snappers canvas picture, courtesy of 96.7 The Eagle. Games will open one hour before game time.
The Beloit Snappers are a member of the Midwest League and a Class-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. For ticket information, contact the Snappers office at 608-362-2272 or visit the website at www.snappersbaseball.com.
