Dayton Dragons News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa-The Cedar Rapids Kernels rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as they came from behind to defeat the Dayton Dragons 5-3 on Saturday night. The loss dropped the Dragons to 14-8 in the second half as they fell to 1-3 on their current six-game road trip.
It was another tough night for the Dayton bullpen. Dragons relievers, who have been outstanding as a group for most of this season, have allowed 15 earned runs in 14.2 innings on the trip.
The Dragons took the early lead when Dominic D'Anna, the third batter of the game, blasted a long home run to right field to make it 1-0. It was D'Anna's seventh homer of the year.
Cedar Rapids took the lead in the fourth when Jeremy Cruz belted a game-tying lead-off home run and Ricky Alvarez scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
Dayton regained the lead in the top of the seventh. Ronald Torreyes reached on an infield single and D'Anna singled to right. David Vidal walked to load the bases. Donald Lutz followed with a hard grounder into right field to drive in Torreyes and D'Anna and give Dayton a 3-2 lead.
But Cedar Rapids got the lead right back in the bottom of the seventh. Travis Witherspoon belted a lead-off home run against Dragons reliever Chad Rogers (2-4) to tie the game. Rolando Gomez reached on a bunt single and Cruz walked. Daniel Wolford replaced Rogers and allowed back-to-back run-scoring singles to Ricky Alvarez and Justin Bass as Cedar Rapids took a 5-3 lead.
The Dragons had only one base runner, a two-out single by Torreyes in the eighth, over the last two innings as the Kernels closed out their fifth straight win.
Dragons starting pitcher Kyle Lotzkar had to leave the game in the fourth inning after suffering a hamstring injury that required assistance off the field. Lotzkar worked three and one-third innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs with one walk and four strikeouts.
The Dragons collected just five hits. Torreyes and D'Anna each had two. Lutz extended his hitting streak to nine straight games, going 1 for 4.
The Dragons (14-8, 49-43) play at Cedar Rapids (11-11, 43-49) on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. (EDT) (980 WONE). Josh Smith (8-4, 2.36) will start for Dayton against Brian Diemer (7-6, 3.25).
The next home game is Wednesday, July 20. On July 23, the Dragons and their fans will enjoy a celebration at Fifth Third Field in relation to the Dragons setting the all-time sports record for consecutive sell-outs. A commemorative poster will be given away to all fans after the game. For information on lawn tickets and group seating options, call (937) 228-2287.
