Green Bay Gamblers News Release
(Green Bay, WI) -) Former Green Bay Gamblers head coach Jon Cooper has lead the Norfolk Admirals to an 18 game winning streak which establishes the longest winning streak in the 76-year history of the American Hockey League with a 5-0 decision over the Charlotte Checkers at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C. this past Sunday.Norfolk's winning streak surpasses the previous mark held by the Philadelphia Phantoms, who won 17 straight games during the 2004-05 season. (The Syracuse Crunch also won 18 consecutive regular-season games, but they spanned the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons.) The Admirals' current 18-game win streak is also one better than the National Hockey League record, held by the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins. Jon Cooper was hired by the Gamblers in the summer of 2008. In two seasons with the Gamblers Jon Cooper amassed a record of 84-27-9 including two Anderson Cup Championships and one Clark Cup Championship. Under the direction of Cooper, the Gamblers did not lose a game in the month of January (20-0-0).
The Cooper era started with the largest turnaround in USHL history. A year removed from a 13 win season the Gamblers ended the 2008-09 season with 39 regular season wins and the captured the franchise's first Anderson Cup Championship (regular season championship) since 1997.
In 2010 the team recorded a record of 45-10-5 in route to a Clark Cup Championship. The 45 wins during the regular season ranks 2nd in the Tier 1 era (Omaha 46) and 3rd in USHL (Des Moines Buccaneers 1998-99/48 wins).
Under second-year head coach Jon Cooper, the Admirals, top affiliate of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning, have pulled away from the pack atop the overall AHL standings, leading the way with a record of 45-18-1-2 and 93 points. On Friday, Norfolk became the first of 16 teams to clinch a berth in the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs, and they are closing in on their first division title since 2003.
