Joiner Receives Scholarship From University

Sioux Falls, S.D. (May 15, 2008) - The Sioux Falls Skyforce announced today that forward Michael Joiner has been awarded a University of Phoenix/NBA Development League Continuing Education Scholarship. He is the latest player to receive this scholarship as a result of a partnership initiated this year between the University of Phoenix and the NBA D-League.
"We're incredibly excited about Michael working towards receiving his Masters Degree from the University of Phoenix," said Kevin Carr, Sr. Director of Player Development. "The NBA D-League's relationship with the University of Phoenix has provided tremendous opportunities for our players and we're very proud that Michael is working hard towards furthering his education."
Joiner, who averaged 10.3 points and 4.4 rebounds in 50 games for Sioux Falls this past season, plans on enrolling in the Master in Business Administration with a specialization in Human Resource Management (MBA/HRM) online program. He previously received his undergraduate degree in Political Science with a minor in Communications at Florida State University.
In addition to pursuing his Masters Degree this summer, Joiner is also participating in the 2008 NBA D-League summer apprenticeship program. The summer apprenticeship program was instituted following the inaugural D-League season (2001-02) in order to create summer jobs and internship opportunities for players in NBA D-League markets. Joiner is currently working with Brende, Schroeder & Meadors Law Office and will also give basketball lessons for TIBBS (Tibbetts Instructional Basketball School).
"I would like to thank the University of Phoenix and D-League for giving me the opportunity to continue my education while playing basketball," said Joiner. "Earning a Masters Degree and participating in the summer apprenticeship program will prepare me for life after basketball."
