July 22, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
For the second time in the last four games the Calgary Vipers were shutout as they were defeated 9-0 by the Edmonton Capitals before 2314 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. Mike Johnson (1-1) was phenomenal for the Capitals as he threw a three-hit shutout on only 96 pitches with 65 of those being strikes. Johnson did not walk a batter, struck out six, and faced only 29 batters which is two over the minimum for a nine-inning game. With the loss Calgary drops to 35-15 overall and 9-2 in the second half but remain in first in both the Golden Baseball League and the North Division.
Evan Greusel (5-2) lost for the first time in over two months as he gave up four runs in four and two-third innings.
Edmonton took the lead in the bottom of the second inning as Walter Young singled, moved to second base on a balk, Aaron Hornostaj also singled, stole second base, and with two outs Kevin House delivered a two-run base hit for a 2-0 advantage.
The Capitals doubled their lead an inning later in the third as Carlos Duncan singled and Darryl Brinkley hit a two-run shot for a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh Edmonton blew the game open as Young singled, Marcus Nettles pinch-ran and stole second base, Chad Ehrnsberger plated one with a base hit, Hornostaj and House singled to load the bases, Jorge Cortes cleared the sacks with a triple, and Carlos Duncan cashed a fifth run on a groundout for a 9-0 advantage.
