Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Calgary Vipers made their first appearance at TELUS Field this season and showed why they are the first half champions and leaders of the Golden Baseball League standings. Calgary scored seven times, pounding out 17 hits and held the Capitals to a single run to win the first game of the Battle of Alberta 7-1.
Leaders in overall team batting average, the Vipers had four batters with three hits in the game including Fehlandt Lentini, Nelson Castro, Colin Moro and Caonabo Cosme. Add in third-place hitter Jorge Mejia and the Vipers top five combined for fourteen hits, seven runs scored and six runs batted in.
For the Caps, Jorge Cortes and newcomer Carlos Duncan had a pair of hits each. Duncan also scored the lone Capital run. The team did manage eight hits and five walks off Viper pitching, but were limited to one extra base hit - a Joey Gomes double - and struggled to come up with a clutch base knock.
Calgary starter Erik Dessau (6-1, 3.61 ERA) picked up the win after pitching into the sixth inning. Trevor Caughey (1-3, 4.55 ERA) threw six complete but took the loss for the Capitals surrendering four runs on twelve hits with five strikeouts. Although he did not factor in the decision, Vipers reliever Brian Oliver pitched a scoreless ninth to run his scoreless innings streak with Calgary to 4.1 innings over four appearances.
Following the series in Victoria this past weekend, the Capitals made a trade with the Seals for third baseman Carlos Duncan in exchange for a player to be named later. Duncan spent last season with the Calgary Vipers before joining Victoria for their inaugural season. To make room on the roster, pitcher David Moraga was released. In addition, pitcher Aaron Easton was activated while infielder Darrick Hale was placed on the Inactive List.
The Battle of Alberta continues tonight on Wiener Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm and great seats still remain. Tickets for all Capitals home games are available at the Capitals Box Office at TELUS Field, any TicketMaster location, by calling 780-414-GOAL (4625) or by visiting CapsBaseball.ca.
