Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - Canaries pitcher Doug Johnson has signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The right-hander will report to Tempe, Arizona for the Angels spring training camp in March.
Johnson is the fourth player to be sent by the Canaries to a major league organization since Mike Pinto took over as manager in December 2004. Along with Johnson, Jose Robles (Cardinals), Clark Parker (Nationals), and Anthony Monegan (Cardinals) have been sent to affiliated baseball under the watch of Pinto.
"Getting to know him over the off-season, I learned that Doug is a quality guy as well as a quality pitcher," said Pinto. "I wish Doug the very best in spring training. If it's not the right fit for him, we look forward to having him in Sioux Falls this summer."
The Canaries acquired Johnson from the Calgary Vipers of the Northern League on September 21. In 2005, he was 8-4 with a 4.89 ERA. Johnson will be making his return to affiliated baseball. He previously spent three years in the Colorado Rockies organization, which selected him in the fifth round of the 2002 draft.
Bird Seeds: The Canaries have introduced a Valentine's Day Pack. The Pack includes eight Upper Executive Tickets and a $40 Gift Certificate for flowers to Gustaf's Greenery for $64. To order call the Canaries at 333-0179. ... Earlier this week, the Canaries signed former major league outfielder Jim Rushford. Rushford played with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2002.
