Joes split with Redfish
July 20, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release
Playing what exceeded one game but didn't quite qualify as a doubleheader, the Joes split the first two games of their series against the Charlotte County Redfish on Friday, winning the conclusion of Thursday night's suspended game, 7-3, before losing in Friday's scheduled game, 4-3, in front of 2,095 at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
The first game of the day picked up right where the suspension left off, in the top of the fifth inning. Taking over managerial duties for the first time, new Anderson skipper Kash Beauchamp saw his newest team score five runs in their first two trips to the plate, withstanding three late runs from the Redfish for the win.
Chase Leatherwood took the win for Anderson, improving to 1-1. Celson Polanco dropped to 0-3 with the loss, while Pete Nickerson earned his first save of the season for the Joes after pitching the final three innings.
Anderson had five different hitters drive in a run and six different runners score, highlighted by Heath Keel's 3-4, 2-RBI effort and Hector Borg's 1-3 game with two runs and an RBI.
Game two had all the makings of a Joes win, what with staff ace Jan Granado starting and Anderson taking an early lead. With Granado having only given up one run through the first five innings, Anderson received a two-run homer from Rafael Alvarez in the third inning and a hit-by-pitch RBI with the bases loaded from Borg in the fourth.
Charlotte County came back late, though, tagging Granado for two runs on three straight bloop hits to left field before taking the lead in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly off Tyler Addison.
Anderson didn't lose without a golden opportunity at a walk-off win, though. The Joes loaded the bases in the shortened game with nobody out in the bottom half of the seventh inning. But a pop-out to second and back-to-back strikeouts ensured Anderson would have no dramatic victory in the nightcap.
"Some of the guys are trying to do too much instead of being patient up there," former Joes manager and newest Joes outfielder Desi Wilson said. "We were just overaggressive and that happens in this game."
Former Joes pitcher Aaron Easton earned his first win for the Redfish, improving to 2-4 on the year. Addison dropped to 1-5 with the loss, while Aristides Almenar worked into and out of trouble in the seventh for his sixth save of the year.
In his highly anticipated debut, Wilson did not record a hit, but still managed to affect the game in almost every other way possible. Wilson reached base three times-- via error, fielder's choice and walk -- stole a base and threw a runner out at home plate for one of the biggest crowd ovations of the night.
"It's been a year, so more than anything, I wasn't trying to do too much, just see the ball as much as possible," Wilson said. "But I got on base and tried to make things happen and that's my job: to help this ball club win some ball games."
The Joes host the Redfish for the rubber match of the series Saturday night, slated for a 7:05 first pitch.
Probable starters are Daniel Howard (1-1) for Anderson and Michael Oberg (1-3) for Charlotte County.
