Peanuts Forced To Forfeit

July 20, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release

The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, lost a series for the first time in over a month on Friday when Macon won 12-2. The game featured a lot of off the field issues including five players or coaches from the Peanuts being ejected and the team leaving the field in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Macon went on top early in the ballgame putting up four runs in both the first and second innings. The fireworks began in the bottom of the second. After a ball that looked foul was ruled a home run by home plate umpire Mike Cheek, Peanuts manager Wally Backman came out to argue the call and was ejected.

The Peanuts did try to make a comeback in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Johnny Washington reached on an error that scored Doc Brooks and Brandon Woolard. Those were the only runs the Peanuts would score.

Macon scored two runs in the fifth to answer back. The Peanuts also had two players ejected by Cheek after striking out looking.

In the bottom of the seventh with Mike Colacchio on the mound, an inside pitch caused Macon's Carlos Arroyo to make a move towards the mound with bat in hand. This move prompted the benches to clear and numerous scrums to take place. After the umpires ejected more Peanuts, the team did not have enough people to take the field and have to forfeit the game.

South Georgia and Macon wrap up the three-game series on Saturday night. Austin Weilep is scheduled to start for the Peanuts. First pitch is set for 7:05. The game can be heard in South Georgia on "1450 The Fan" and online at southgeorgiapeanuts.com.
