Aiken Foxhounds News Release

AIKEN, S.C. - Looking for their first sweep since late May, the Aiken Foxhounds (27-29, 5-6) never got their offense going, collecting just five hits and getting shutout 8-0 as the Bradenton Juice salvaged the finale of a three-game series Friday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. Due to the game originally being scheduled for Bradenton, the Juice played as the home team.

Four Bradenton pitchers combined on the six-hit shutout. Starter Rocky Collis (3-5) earned the win, allowing just two hits in five innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Derek Hawk allowed two hits in two innings of relief while Steve Alverson and Jim O'Malia allowed a hit apiece in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.

Facing Aiken starter Mark Dewey, the Juice plated a run in the opening inning. Julius Thames led off with a single, stole second, and scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Al Corbeil.

The Juice then essentially determined the outcome of the game in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Brennan Herrera had an RBI single in the inning, but Corbeil and Eddie Kim had the big blows of the inning, hitting back-to-back home runs. Corbeil's home run, his ninth of the season, was a three-run shot to deep right field. Kim followed with his fifth homer, a long shot just inside the right-field foul pole.

Dewey (0-2) took the loss, allowing all eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits in four innings of work. Jesse Krause, Kevin Holt, and Brian Grijalva worked the final four innings and allowed just two hits.

Kim finished the day 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI, Corbeil went 2-for-4 with two runs and four driven in, and Thames had two hits in five at-bats and scored twice.

The Foxhounds did not have a player with more than one hit, and Chad Miller's double in the eighth was the team's lone extra-base hit.

Aiken returns to action on Sunday, July 22, against Charlotte County in Port Charlotte, Fla., at 7:05 PM.
