Joes Give Up Runs Early, Fall, 7-1

June 27, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release

South Georgia responded in typical fashion to their first loss against Anderson this year, beating the Joes, 7-1, in the rubber match of their three-game series Wednesday. The Peanuts put up five runs in the first two innings and never looked back.

Joes starter Kevin Culpepper, normally a reliable option for Anderson (8-27), lasted only two innings, having surrendered the five runs and six hits in the first two frames. Nick Prosise's two-run double in the first inning was the biggest blow of the night and set the tone for the remainder of the game.

The Peanuts returned to their high-octane brand of baseball, stealing four bases, notching 11 hits, and getting 17 total runners on base. Austin Weilep improved to 5-1 on the year with the win for South Georgia (24-9), still the only team in the league yet to lose 10 games. Despite allowing 10 hits, Weilep struck out five, walked none and allowed the lone Joes run in six innings of work.

Culpepper took the loss, dropping to 0-2 on the year.

Whereas South Georgia would add to their lead with runs in the fourth and seventh, Anderson had difficulty all night mustering offense. While the Joes did total 10 hits, they left nine men on base and scattered their hits across six different innings, never bunching them together for a significant rally.

Notably, Tanner Rogers scored the lone Joes run, his first as an Anderson player. Brandon Carter was one of the few bright spots for the Joes, as well, as the leadoff man who scored the winning run in Tuesday's victory went 3-for-5 in the game.

"We're playing really well. We hit the ball really well today, we just didn't get the hits when we needed them," Carter said. "But we're still pushing and I still like the confidence in our team."

The Joes host their in-state rival Aiken Foxhounds to rekindle the Palmetto Series presented by Fairchild Roofing. Anderson won the last time the two met, a 9-6 victory in Aiken on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
