Peanuts Crush Joes, 7-1

South Georgia Peanuts News Release


The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, took another series on Wednesday night with a 7-1 win over the Anderson Joes. The win gave the Peanuts a 5-1 record as the week-long road trip came to an end. Austin Weilep got the start and recorded his fifth win of the season.

The scoring started early for South Georgia with the Peanuts putting up three runs in the top of the first inning against Anderson starter Kevin Culpepper. Jasha Balcom led the inning off with a single and then stole second. Mike Caruso was able to single Balcom home before stealing second. Jon Zeringue walked with two outs before Nick Prosise hit a double that scored both Caruso and Zeringue.

South Georgia continued to attack Culpepper in the second. Johnny Washington and Austin Weilep led the inning off with base hits. Mike Caruso and Steve Garrabrants each picked up an RBI in the inning as the Peanuts made it 5-0.

The Peanuts were able to put up two more runs in the game. In the fourth, Austin Weilep walked, went first to third on a Balcom base hit and then scored via a Caruso Fielder's Choice. In the seventh, Zeringue walked, moved to third on a Nick Prosise double and then scored on a Steve Butler sacrifice fly.

Peanuts starting pitcher Austin Weilep recorded his fifth win pitching six innings and only allowing one run while scattering ten hits with six strikeouts. Jared Doyle made his Peanuts debut pitching a perfect seventh inning. Pat Ford pitched a perfect eighth with two strikeouts while Ja Jones pitched a perfect ninth to finish things out.

South Georgia returns home to Albany Thursday night to start a three-game set with the Charlotte County Redfish. Dumas Garcia will get the start for the Peanuts. First pitch is set for 7:10.
