Charlotte County Redfish News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- An afternoon rainstorm cooled down the Charlotte Sports Park before the start of the ballgame between the Redfish and the Bradenton Juice. Daniel Chaffardet made his 7th start and faced off against Travis Kane. It was a pitchers duel early, but Manager Cecil Fielder's second ever ejection and a great performance from the Redfish bullpen and bats drove the Redfish to a 5-2 victory.
Bradenton got to Chaffardet early as Luke Barganier blooped a single to left and moved to second on a Jean Castro 3-unassisted fielder's choice. Al Corbeil drew a walk and with two on, Mikela Olsen popped a ball just out of the reach of Redfish second baseman, Ramon Downing, and the Juice were up 1-0. Noah Peery followed with an RBI single of his own, but the inning ended as Olsen tried for third and was out on the 5-6 putout.
The Redfish quickly responded as Billy Kovatch placed a 2-out double to right. Kovatch, whose has been "Kaptain Klutch" for the Redfish, came around to score as Aaron Simmons' double rolled all the way to the wall in center and the Redfish were within run at the end of the 2nd. After a scoreless third, Downing came to the plate against Kane and drilled a solo homerun off, up and over the right field wall to tie the game at 2. The Redfish would get a single from PJ Lehmann and Kovatch but couldn't push them across.
When the Redfish were up in the top of the 5th, Manager Cecil Fielder was noticeably unhappy with home plate umpire John Bennett's strike zone. Millard Dawson went down looking to lead of the 5th and Fielder went out to discuss the call with Bennett. With a strike against the next hitter, Jose Gutierrez, Fielder was tossed by Bennett and quickly jumped out of his seat on the top step of the Redfish dugout. Kane finished the inning with two more Ks to keep the score tied.
With Fielder's ejection, the Redfish had the momentum and it showed as Brandon Camardese (1-1) came on in relief of Chaffardet. Chaffardet finished the night with 2 ER, 3 hits, 2 BB and 2 Ks in 5.0 innings. Camadese worked 1-2-3 6th and 7th innings and struck out all but one Juice hitter. "Before I was trying to over throw and the last couple of games, I've been working counts instead of trying to throw as hard I can," said Camardese after the game. "It was good to get the win, but Danny pitched a great game today and he deserved the win."
With the bullpen keeping the score tied, the Redfish broke the game open as Dawson and Gutierrez both reached to start the 7th against Juice reliever, Jim O'Malia. Josh Murray, who went 2-for-5, advanced Dawson to third with a sac-fly to center and Downing followed and reached on a chopper to first that scored Dawson as Juice first baseman, Eddie Kim, threw too high for his catcher to attempt a tag. The Redfish weren't done as Lehmann and Kovatch put up back-to-back RBI singles and the Redfish took the lead, 5-2.
The Redfish bullpen continued to impress as Justin Wichert tossed a scoreless 8th. Camadese and Wichert combined to strike out 4 in a row and 6 of 7 Juice hitters from the 6th to 8th inning. Aristedes Almenar came on in and earned his 4th save as he struck out two in a 1-2-3 9th inning. Billy Kovatch said after that the game, "We got to keep our hitters, 1 through 9, hitting the bat." "This is no sprint. It's a 90 game marathon and you have to take it one game at time. We can't stop scoring and we have to score early and often."
The Redfish head to Albany, Georgia to take on the Peanuts for three games beginning tomorrow night, June 28th. The Redfish will send LHP Justin Ottman to the hill in the first game of the series. First pitch is set of 7:05 PM. All Redfish games can be heard on 1070 AM WKII and online at www.redfishbaseball.com. For more information, check out www.redfishbaseball.com.
