PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Anderson visited Charlotte County hoping that a change of scenery would change the Joes' losing ways to start the second half of the season. Instead, a lack of offense cost Anderson in its 5-1 loss Thursday.
Having taken two of three games from the Redfish the last time the teams played here, the Joes had high hopes for Thursday's game, especially considering the recent success of starting pitcher Ronald Ball. Ball delivered with 6 innings pitched, striking out seven and allowing three runs on a total of eight baserunners. Still, he took the loss for Anderson (0-4, 13-36 overall), whose bats seemed to not make the trip with the team.
Leadoff hitter Brandon Carter broke out of an 0-for-13 slump with two hits in his first two at-bats, including a triple in the third inning that positioned him to score on a Hector Borg groundout that made it a 2-1 game at the time. Other than that, the offense struggled, getting 10 runners on and stranding nine.
The Redfish, on the other hand, scored two runs in the first inning to take a lead they would never give up and added two home runs for insurance later in the game. Josh Murray hit his sixth of the year and Jason Hurst his second en route to the final 5-1 score.
Ball took the loss, dropping to 2-1 on the year. Charlotte County starter Brandon Camardese lasted five innings for the win, allowing four hits, one run and three walks. He struck out six Joes in improving to 2-1 on the season.
Charlotte County (2-2, 14-35) improved to .500 in the second half of the season, while Anderson still searches for its first win. The teams meet again Friday night for a 7:05 start. Probable starters are Jan Grando for the Joes and Ricardo Gomez for the Redfish.
