Aiken Foxhounds News Release
AIKEN, S.C. - The Aiken Foxhounds (22-26, 0-3) left 11 runners on base, including eight in scoring position with less than two outs, and the visiting Bradenton Juice (28-20, 4-0) squeezed out two runs in the seventh inning to post a 2-1 victory over the 'Hounds Thursday night at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. With the loss, Aiken has now lost 14 of their last 17 games.
After giving up the lead in the top of the seventh, Aiken threatened in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with no outs. However, a strikeout, a fielder's choice out at the plate, and a fly ball to left ended the threat.
The Foxhounds again threatened in the ninth, as Tim Sweeney doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on an error. Again with three opportunities to drive in the game-tying run, the Aiken offense failed. Marshall Plouffe struck out both Scott Houin and Garth McKinney before getting Chad Miller on a hard lineout to center.
The game was a pitchers' duel throughout due to the impressive outings of Aiken's Anthony Telford and Bradenton's Pat Ford.
Ford cruised through the first four innings, allowing just two hits, before the Foxhounds finally pushed a run across in the bottom of the fifth. Reinaldo Ramirez led off with a bunt single and scored on a two-out RBI single by Miller for a 1-0 'Hounds lead.
Ford (2-1) then allowed three hits in the sixth, but Aiken was unable to add to their lead thanks to a double play and Reinaldo Ramirez getting thrown out by the right fielder when he rounded first base too far. Ford finished his night throwing 6.0 innings, allowing one run on seven hits while walking three and striking out four.
Telford was even better as the veteran worked around a single in each of the first two innings to retire 13 straight batters from the end of the second inning through the end of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, a few unlucky breaks for Telford and an error by the 'Hounds turned into two runs for the Juice. The pitcher induced a ground ball from Eddie Kim to lead off the frame, but the ball hit off the first base bag and over the head of Miller, allowing Kim to reach second with a double. After two outs, Brandon Herrera was jammed but his blooper landed just over the head of the third baseman to score Kim with the tying run. Zach Woodward then reached on a throwing error, allowing Herrera to score with the game-winning run.
Telford (1-3) was hit with another tough loss, allowing just the two runs, one earned, in seven innings of work while walking none and striking out eight.
Ramirez went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Foxhounds while Bradley Key had two hits in four at-bats. Herrera went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for the Juice.
