Anderson Joes News Release
AIKEN, S.C. - Make it three series in a row the Joes have taken the first game from their opponents.
Anderson beat Aiken, 6-3, Thursday night in front of 1,248 at Roberto Hernandez Stadium for back-to-back wins.
The Joes now sit alone in fourth place in the league, just one game below .500.
Making his first start of the season, former pitching coach Dallas Mahan pitched five strong innings, holding Aiken's powerful offense to just two runs in their cozy home park.
But the bigger story came from Anderson's bats.
Averaging just eight hits and four runs per game over their last 10-game stretch, the Joes busted out for six runs on 15 hits, their second-highest hit output of the season. Anderson peppered 14 of the hits for singles. A balanced effort led the Joes to victory, as eight different batters earned hits, six different runners scored and five hitters drove in a run.
Hector Borg and Desi Wilson led the way with three hits each, while Borg, Richard Quihuis-Bell, Kevin Noles and Brandon Davis each had both a hit and RBI.
Anderson (7-8, 20-40 overall) roughed up Aiken (6-9, 28-32) starter Steve Dunham early, tagging him for five runs on seven hits in just 2.1 innings and forcing Aiken to use five pitchers in the game.
The Joes needed just two hurlers, as Mahan earned the win and Austin Redwine pitched four innings of one-run ball for his first save of the season. Mahan improved to 1-0 with the win, while Dunham dropped to 5-6 with the loss.
In the Palmetto Series rivalry, the Joes have now crept up to one game shy of the 'Hounds, trailing six games to seven. Anderson has now taken five in a row against their in-state foes and aims to win its third series in a row overall with a win Friday.
If the Joes win, they will pull even both in the Palmetto Series and in the second-half season record.
Anderson will send Dave Whitfield (1-2) against Reid Price (3-3) for the first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
