Aiken Foxhounds News Release

AIKEN, S.C. - Desi Wilson and Dallas Mahan, both recently activated former coaches, led the visiting Anderson Joes (20-40, 6-7) to a 6-3 victory over the Aiken Foxhounds (28-32, 6-9) Thursday night at Roberto Hernadez Stadium. Winners of five-straight against Aiken, Anderson has cut the 'Hounds advantage in the Palmetto State Series to 6-7.

Wilson, the former manager, had three hits and gunned out a runner at the plate in the eighth, and Mahan, the former pitching coach making his first start, pitched five effective innings to lead the Joes to the win.

Despite not being hit extremely hard, Aiken starter Steve Dunham allowed three hits in the top of the second inning as Anderson jumped ahead 3-0. The Joes got two singles through the infield, a bunt single, and a bloop single to put together the successful inning.

Anderson put together three more singles and an RBI groundout to add two more runs and chase Dunham from the game.

Aiken responded in their half of the third. Josh Eachues led off against Mahan with a double to right, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a triple by Scott Houin. An RBI single from Kelly Hunt plated Houin and cut the Joes' lead to 5-2.

The score stayed there until the bottom of the sixth, when the 'Hounds drew closer against Joes' reliever Austin Redwine. Ben Bando reached on a one-out double off the wall in left-center and scored on Eachues' two-out single.

A wild pitch from Aiken reliever Jesse Krause allowed Hector Borg to score an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning.

Aiken mounted with a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth, but Wilson gunned out Ben Bando at the plate on Eachues' fourth hit of the night to end the threat and protect the Joes' three-run lead.

Mahan (1-0), making his first start since giving up his pitching coach duties to become an active player, earned the win for the Joes. The southpaw pitched five innings, allowing just two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out six.

Redwine did not allow a run after the sixth inning and finished the game for a rare four-inning save. The right-handed pitcher allowed one run on five hits while walking one and striking out four.

Dunham (5-6) took the loss for the Hounds, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in 2.1 innings.

Eachues went 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI to lead the 'Hounds while Houin added a 3-for-5 night with a run scored and another driven in.

The Foxhounds lost despite three doubles and a triple, while the Joes had 14 singles as part of their 15-hit attack. Hector Borg and Wilson both had three hits in five at-bats for Anderson.

The Joes and Foxhounds will play game two of their three-game set Friday night at Hernandez Stadium with the first pitch set for 7:05 PM.
