Redfish Lose Series Opener

July 26, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Redfish came off an emotional series where they notched two 1-run wins including a 1-0 win in the rubber game to welcome the South Georgia Peanuts. Charlotte County sent Ryan Amason to the hill to see if he could build off his excellent performance in the Aiken series, but the Peanuts' were too much as they plated 6 runs in the 3rd inning and went on to drown the ‘Fish 8-2.

Amason (0-1) picked up where he left off as he retired the first two Peanuts' batter he faced. Doc Brooks dropped a single into right field but Amason left him stranded as Nick Prosise flied out. Though he allowed a leadoff single and stolen base to Jaysha BalcomS to start the 2nd inning, Amason set down the side in order with 2 Ks and groundout.

Shannon Wirth (8-1) was on the hill for the Peanuts and it seemed that the Redfish's best chance came in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Billy Hogan got into one that appeared to be gone off the bat but the ballpark held it for a double. Wirth then retired the side in order leaving Hogan stranded.

The Peanuts got to Amason early and often in the 3rd inning. Wirth doubled down the leftfield line to start a string of 4 consecutive hits and South Georgia had a 2-0 lead. Nick Prosise laid down a bunt that Amason threw away which was one of two errors that allowed the Peanuts to extend the inning. The Peanuts would bat around and plate 4 more runs to take a 6-0 lead and quickly sour Amason's first start.

Amason finished with 4 ER on 7 hits in 3.0 innings of work. He struck out 3 and walked his first batter, an intentional pass to Jaysha Balcom. The Redfish bullpen kept the Peanuts off the scoreboard as 3 relievers combined to throw 4 scoreless innings. Andy Polk, Aaron Easton, and Froilan Ramirez combined to retire 12 of the 14 Peanuts they faced and allowed only 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 1.

Charlotte County finally reached Wirth and cracked the scoreboard in the 6th inning. Jason Hurst reached on an E6 and Hogan push him all the way to third as he picked up his 2nd double of the night. Josh Murray, who is still recovering from a cold that put him on the DL, walked to load the bases and William Plaza, who finished the night 1-for-3 and reached base twice, sacrificed home Hurst and picked up his 29th RBI as the Redfish were on the board. Jose Gutierrez came through with a flare just behind first base to push the Redfish with 4 runs at 6-2.

Aaron Simmons, who first pitched for the Redfish against these same Peanuts, hoped to keep it close for a possible Redfish rally. South Georgia, though, plated a run in the 8th and 9th innings and forced the Redfish to commit their 4th error on the night to put the game out of reach as they downed the ‘Fish 8-2 in the series opener.

The Redfish will look to bounce back and force another rubber game as they take on the South Georgia Peanuts tomorrow night, July 27th. Game time is set for 7:05 PM.
