Jewell Loyd Drains OT Buzzer-Beater as Storm Beat Dallas, 105-102

June 5, 2021 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) - Seattle Storm News Release

EVERETT, Wash. - Jewell Loyd has done this before.

On Friday night, she did it again.

Loyd's 3-point shot from 25 feet straight in front of the basket nestled into the net as the overtime buzzer was sounding, giving the Seattle Storm a 105-102 victory against the Dallas Wings at Angel Of The Winds Arena.

It was the second overtime game this season between the two Western Conference teams. On May 22 in Dallas, the Storm pulled out a 100-97 victory.

With the scored tied at 102-102, thanks to a Loyd lay-in with 38.7 seconds left, the Storm the ball with eight-tenths of a second on the clock. Coming out of a timeout, Stephanie Talbot inbounded from the right side, right at about the top of the 3-point arc. Loyd caught it and let fly with a high, arcing shot that went right through the net.

The horn was sounding while the ball was in the air, and the officials did review the play. After about a minute, the lead official raised both arms, signaling that the shot was good.

That was the last of Loyd's game-high 25 points, as she hit 8 of 11 from the floor, including 4 of 6 from downtown.

Breanna Stewart added 23 and Talbot poured in a season-high 21 for Seattle (7-1), which won its sixth game in a row and is off to a 7-1 start for the third time in franchise history. In the two previous seasons where the Storm started 7-1 or better (2010, 2020), the team went on to win the WNBA Championship.

When the teams played in Dallas last month, it was a Loyd 3-pointer with 11.8 seconds left in regulation that ultimately set up Jordin Canada's game-tying shot to force overtime. Loyd finished that game with 25 points.

Last Sept. 4 in Bradenton, Florida, Loyd pulled off similar last-second heroics. That one was a late-season contest against the Los Angeles Sparks, and the Storm was down 89-87 - again, with eight-tenths of a second left. Sue Bird inbounded to Loyd, and Loyd drained a trey from the left corner for a 90-87 triumph.

On Friday, Seattle had a 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter, 92-82. But Dallas (2-5) outscored the Storm by a 14-4 margin the rest of the way.

The Wings thought they had a 97-96 lead when Satou Sabally hit a shot from the top of the key with 6.9 seconds left. But after the officials reviewed it, the shot was ruled a 2-pointer, leaving it tied at 96-96. In those final seconds, Seattle had two shots, one of them right under the hoop by Stewart that was blocked by Sabally, and Dallas had one, which Talbot blocked.

The Storm scored the initial basket of overtime in a lay-in by Mercedes Russell for a 98-96 lead. But they were not on top again until Loyd's buzzer-beater, The Wings had leads of 100-98 and 102-100.

Friday's game counted toward the Commissioner's Cup. The Storm are now 5-0 in Cup games.

Marina Mabrey pumped in 24 points for Dallas (2-5) while Arike Ogunbowale added 22.
