Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports' five-game win streak came to an end in lopsided fashion on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. The Lancaster JetHawks scored 16 runs on 20 hits with 11 of those runs coming in the final two frames on their way to a 16-6 win over the Ports to take their first game of the series.
In a game that was a back-and-forth affair until the eighth, the JetHawks scored the first run of the contest in the third. Max George singled to lead off the inning and scored two batters later on an RBI single by Alan Trejo to give the JetHawks a 1-0 lead.
The Ports jumped in front in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Nate Mondou hit a sac-fly to center to tie the game at 1-1. Jonah Heim followed with an RBI single to right and Dairon Blanco came up next and hit a sac-fly to right to make it a 3-1 Ports advantage.
Lancaster tied the game in the ensuing half-inning on a two-run homer by Roberto Ramos, his second in as many nights, to make it 3-3.
Stockton pulled ahead in the bottom of the fifth as Blanco reached on a one-out single and scored on a triple that followed by Skye Bolt that gave the Ports a 4-3 advantage. It was the final run allowed by JetHawks starter Matt Dennis (2-4), who went on to earn the win after going five innings and allowing four runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out three.
Ports starter Matt Milburn (1-2) would pitch into the sixth but was unable to find his way out of the frame. With one on and two out, Brian Servin hit a two-run homer to left that vaulted the JetHawks back in front 5-4. Milburn would suffer the loss, going 5.2 innings and allowing five runs on 11 hits while striking out five
Brendan Butler came on in relief of Milburn and did not allow a run over his first inning-and-a-third. In the eighth, however, with two outs, the JetHawks rallied for four runs on three doubles and a walk. George doubled to right to score Ramos and make it 7-5. Forrest Wall came up next and hit an RBI double to center and, two batters later, Colton Welker doubled to drive in a fourth run to run the JetHawks lead to 9-4.
The Ports got a run back in the bottom of the eighth as they loaded the bases with one out and got an RBI single from Kevin Merrell. With the bases loaded and one out and the possible-tying run at the plate, Mondou and Heim both flew out to left to end the frame. JetHawks reliever Justin Lawrence allowed one run on three hits in his lone inning.
Lancaster put the game away with a seven-run top of the ninth. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Servin drove in the first run of the inning on a fielder's choice force play. After George was hit by a pitch, Butler was lifted for Brallan Perez who made his first career pitching appearance. After Perez struck out Wall, he issued a bases-loaded walk to Trejo, gave up an RBI single to Welker and then surrendered a grand slam to Manny Melendez that ballooned the JetHawks lead to 16-5.
Butler was charged with eight runs on seven hits over two-and-two-thirds innings. Perez gave up three runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.
The Ports added a run in the bottom of the ninth on a home run by Edwin Diaz, his second in as many nights, but it was the only run allowed by Lancaster reliever Alexander Guillen.
The Ports and JetHawks wrap up their four-game set with a matinee on Thursday morning at Banner Island Ballpark. Zack Erwin (2-1, 2.38 ERA) toes the slab for Stockton, opposed by Lancaster right-hander Logan Longwith (0-2, 8.18 ERA). First pitch is set for 11:10 a.m. PDT.
