Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS -- The Atlanta Braves announced the minor league players and pitchers of the month for May. For the Double-A Mississippi club, right-hander Tyrell Jenkins and outfielder Mallex Smith were selected for the monthly accolades.
Jenkins, 22, posted a record of 3-1 with a 3.35 ERA in six starts during the month of May. The Braves No. 12 prospect as ranked by Baseball America worked seven shutout innings, giving up just three hits, against the Blue Wahoos on May 17. A native of Henderson, TX, Jenkins was acquired by the Braves as part of a trade with the Cardinals that sent Jason Heyward and Jordan Walden to St. Louis on November 17, 2014. He was originally selected by the Cardinals in the supplemental round (50th overall) of the 2010 draft.
Smith, 22, posted a .347 batting average in 26 games during the month of May. He had three doubles, one homer, 10 RBI and 10 stolen bases during the month. The outfielder currently ranks third among all Braves farmhands with 18 stolen bases on the year. Smith was acquired by the Braves via trade with the Padres along with several others in exchange for Justin Upton and Aaron Northcraft on December 19, 2014. He was originally selected by San Diego in the fifth round of the 2012 draft.
The M-Braves continue an 11-game homestand with games 10 and 11 Thursday and Friday evening at Trustmark Park. The Braves then hit the road for a five-game series at Montgomery before returning home June 11-15. Tickets are on sale now.
The Mississippi Braves baseball team is the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Since making the move from Greenville, SC, in 2005, over 95 M-Braves have gone on to play in the big leagues.
