Brigham Tosses Complete-Game One-Hitter
June 4, 2015 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS -- Jake Brigham retired 24 straight batters, taking a perfect game into the ninth, before surrendering a leadoff double. Brigham faced one batter over the minimum, tossing a complete game one-hitter to lead the Mississippi Braves to an 8-1 victory over the Jackson Generals at Trustmark Park Thursday evening.
The Mississippi Braves have never had a perfect game in its 10-plus year history. Only two no-hitters have been thrown in M-Braves history-Tommy Hanson (individual in 2008) and Julio Teheran/Tyrelle Harris (combined in 2010).
Brigham (5-2) was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week this past Monday after tossing eight shutout innings at Pensacola and giving up just three hits in that contest on May 29 at Trustmark Park. Thursday the right-handed pitcher threw 96 pitches, 68 for strikes.
Mississippi (29-23) scored eight runs on 13 hits while Jackson (22-30) plated one run on one hit in the ninth. Brigham took the mound in the ninth, looking to complete the perfect game but gave up a leadoff double to Jackson's Dan Paolini. A wild pitch moved him to third before Marcus Littlewood grounded out to drive Paolini home and eliminate the shutout.
The scoring started early. Back-to-back doubles from Matt Lipka and Emerson Landoni gave the M-Braves a 1-0 lead in the third. An errant throw by the shortstop allowed David Rohm to reach first safely, putting runners at the corners with one out. KD Kang then singled up the middle to make it a 2-0 game. A balk brought home Rohm and then Rio Ruiz doubled to drive in Kang. The final run scored on a Kevin Ahrens base hit to left, extending the Braves lead to 5-0.
The M-Braves added a run in the sixth. Ahrens singled and moved to second on a ground out. He then came around to score on an Eric Garcia liner to center field, making it a 6-0 game.
Garcia belted a two-run homer in the eighth to make it 8-0. It was his first long ball of the season with the M-Braves.
Misael Siverio (1-5) worked just 2.2 innings and took the loss. He gave up five runs, two earned, on seven hits and a walk while fanning two batters.
In Friday night's series finale at Trustmark Park, the M-Braves send right-hander Jorge Reyes (5-2, 1.36) to the hill. Jackson counters with lefty James Gillheeney (3-1, 2.58). First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
