DUNEDIN, FL - The Clearwater Threshers (2-2) used two-out hitting and lockdown pitching to shutout the Dunedin Blue Jays (2-2) 7-0 on Sunday afternoon. All seven of the Threshers' runs came with two outs including a first inning two-run home run from 1B Kyle Martin.
RHP Justin Shafer (L, 0-1) allowed five runs over his four inning start. RF Herlis Rodriguez provided Clearwater with an RBI-single in the second followed by a two-run single from SS Malquin Canelo. The final two runs came off LHP Jose Fernandez in the seventh inning when 3B Zach Green ripped a double down the third base line to plate two more.
Four Threshers' pitchers combined on a 3-hit shutout of the Blue Jays. Starting pitcher RHP Elniery Garcia (W, 1-0) gave up each of the three hits and struck out five, including four looking, over his 5.1 innings of work. RHP Jairo Munoz, LHP Joey DeNato and RHP Victor Arano took care of the rest with 3.2 innings of hitless baseball.
The Jays head to St. Lucie for a four game series beginning on Monday. RHP Luis Santos (1-0, 0.00) will start the opener for the Jays while Scarlyn Reyes (0-0, 0.00) will go for the Mets. Dunedin is back home on Friday night against Palm Beach.
