Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
BRADENTON, Fla. - The Bradenton Marauders took advantage of some sloppy fielding by the visiting Fort Myers Miracle, scoring unearned runs in the ninth and tenth innings, to post a 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at McKechnie Field.
The game started well for the Miracle as they took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Marauders starter Yeudy Garcia. Tanner English led off the game by reaching on an infield single, and Nick Gordon followed with a double to left to put runners on second and third. After a walk to T.J. White, Alex Real followed two batters later with a single to center to score English.
In the top of the fifth, the Miracle extended their lead. Gordon led off the frame with a double to left field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a walk and a fielder's choice, Real came through once again, lifting a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Gordon to give the Miracle a 2-0 advantage.
Meanwhile, Miracle starting pitcher Keaton Steele was shutting the Marauders down, having not allowed a hit until Kevin Newman lined a two-out single to center field in the sixth inning. Unfortunately for Fort Myers, Kevin Kramer then followed that hit with one of his own, this one a double that scored Newman to cut the Marauders deficit to 2-1. Steele left the game at that point, allowing just those two hits in 5 2/3 innings of work in his Miracle debut.
In the seventh, the Fort Myers regained their two-run lead. Alex Swim was hit by a pitch to lead off, and Real followed that with a base on balls. After Logan Wade struck out, Ryan Walker reached on an infield single to load the bases before Chad Christensen drew another walk to score Swim from third, giving the Miracle a 3-1 advantage.
The Marauders, however, answered right back as they used a walk, a single, and a ground out off of reliever Raul Fernandez to close the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of that seventh inning.
Fort Myers still held that 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning when Bradenton took advantage of an error to tie the score. Trev Hildenberger came on to pitch for the Miracle, and promptly retired Jerrick Suiter on a ground ball to start the inning. Chase Simpson then tripled to right field, and scored on an errant relay throw by Gordon to tie things up and send the game to extra innings.
After Fort Myers put a runner on base but failed to score in the top of the tenth, the Marauders again were the recipients of a defensive miscue in the bottom of the frame to claim the victory. With one out, Newman reached on a two-base error by Miracle right fielder Chad Christensen, and then Kramer followed with an infield single, sending Newman to third. Connor Joe then ended the game with a line drive single to right to score Newman with the winning run.
Hildenberger (0-1), despite not allowing an earned run, suffered the loss, while Edgar Santana (1-0), the fourth pitcher of the day for the Marauders, earned the victory with three scoreless innings of relief.
Offensively for the Miracle, Gordon collected four hits, three of which were doubles, to lead a 12-hit attack, while Real finished 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in.
The Miracle (2-2) now return home to Hammond Stadium on Monday night for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch against the Brevard County Manatees in the first of a four-game series. Fans can listen to the broadcast with the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman at http://www.miraclebaseball.com/. The MiracleBaseball.com pregame show begins at 6:35 p.m.
