CURVE, Pa. - Altoona Curve Starting Pitcher Jared Hughes has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 16, the league announced earlier today. It is the first career Pitcher of the Week honor for Hughes and the first for a member of the Altoona Curve since Yoslan Herrera won the award in 2008 (June 2-9).

Hughes, 24, made two starts for Altoona last week and compiled a 2-0 record with wins over Harrisburg and Richmond. Hughes went a season-high seven innings in both starts and permitted a total of three runs (one earned) in his 14 innings of work to compile a miniscule 0.64 ERA for the week. The right hander from Long Beach State also struck out six and walked just a pair over the same time frame.

The Samford, Conn. native has a 7-1 record with a 3.16 ERA through eight games (seven starts) in 2010 and currently leads all of Minor League Baseball with his seven wins. He's also turned in three quality starts in a row dating back to April 30.

This is the fifth professional season for Hughes, who is also in his second year with the Curve. Pittsburgh selected Hughes in the fourth round of the 2006 draft out of Long Beach State.

First-place Altoona (22-14) begins a three-game series with the Akron Aeros (14-23) at 6:30 p.m. on a Two-for-Tuesday at Blair County Ballpark. The Curve sends LHP Justin Wilson (1-3, 3.81), who has a 1.69 ERA in the month of May, to the hill searching for a win while Akron counters with LHP Scott Barnes (0-4, 7.20).

Fans can receive two-for-one pricing on tickets, hot dogs and popcorn on Two-for-Tuesday presented by Atlantic Broadband and KRAFT Singles.
