San Angelo Colts News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas - Lefty Frank James was brilliant, tossing a complete game while allowing just one earned run, as the San Angelo Colts handed Harlingen lefty Jorge Lugo his first loss of the season with a 7-2 victory in front of a big crowd of 3,324 at Foster Field.
James (2-3) allowed just five hits and two runs (one earned), and was on his game all night inducing 15 groundball outs. After a 1-2-3 first, he allowed both runs in the second to tie the game. But he allowed just two hits and no walks after that, retiring 10 in a row at one point. It was his first win in exactly a month, since he won the home opener at Foster Field on May 20 against Laredo. The lefty also faced only six over the minimum all night, and struck out four WhiteWings hitters.
The Colts (21-16) got off to a good start against Lugo (3-1). Tyrone Pendergrass led off with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Kevin Griffin. John Anderson followed with an RBI single to left field for the first run. Anderson then stole second, and scored after a pair of groundouts.
After Harlingen (14-23) tied it in the second, San Angelo retook the lead in the bottom half. Jose Torres led off with a walk, and advanced to third on back-to-back singles by Robert Mendoza and Wyn Diggs. Charley Belew then hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Torres with the eventual winning run. The Colts tacked on two more in the third on three singles and two RBI groundouts, before finishing the scoring in the seventh with a wall-scraping two-run home run by Torres, his fifth of the season, which came on a 3-0 count.
Aside from the two-run second, the WhiteWings never had two men on base in the same inning. Harlingen got a pair of singles in the seventh, but James picked off Argelis Nunez at first before David Fowler's single.
With the win, the Colts drew to within 2.5 games of idle Amarillo for first place in the United League standings. The Dillas play two doubleheaders in Laredo the next two days.
Notes: Eight of the nine Colts batters had hits in the game, as Frichter and Rodriguez had two each, while Mendoza had three...Tyrone Pendergrass extended his streak of reaching base to 34 consecutive games, tying Danny Bravo of Amarillo for the longest ULB streak. Ryan Fox of Harlingen was 0-for-4 and saw his streak end at 33. Torres is right behind them at 31...Torres' homer was one of just two extra-base hits in the game, with Nunez's double being the other.
The Colts continue this weekend homestand against Harlingen at 7:05 p.m. CT on Saturday, June 21, which features a Baseball Cap giveaway for the first 1,000 fans through the gate, sponsored by Reliant and Fox-10. Advertising, ticket, and group information are available by calling the box office at (325) 942-6587. All Colts games are broadcast live on "Cool 100" - KCLL 100.1 FM and online at the Colts' official website, www.sanangelocolts.com, which is updated daily with the latest team news.
