Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp play at the Mobile BayBears in Saturday's 7:05 p.m. ET contest. RHP Jorge Guzman (4-8, 4.12 ERA) starts for the Shrimp against Mobile RHP Tyler Carpenter (0-0, 2.78 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.tv, Sunny 102.3 FM, TuneIn and JaxShrimp.com.

JACKSONVILLE STUMBLES IN 4-2 DEFEAT

Two Mobile runs in the eighth inning on Friday allowed the BayBears to beat the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 4-2. The BayBears took a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run double by Julian Leon. Adrian Nieto, who was reassigned to Jacksonville prior to Friday's game, socked a solo home run in the third to halve the Mobile advantage. The Jumbo Shrimp tied the score in the fifth on an RBI ground out from Anfernee Seymour. The score remained 2-2 until the eighth. A ground ball single by Erick Salcedo plated a pair of runs to place Mobile ahead 4-2. In the ninth, Jacksonville was able to get the tying run to the plate, but could not score to seal a defeat. Josh Roeder allowed just two runs on three hits in five innings in a starting role.

TRENDS SET

Throughout every level in the history of baseball, nearly every team expects to go about .500 in games decided by one or two runs. However, the Jumbo Shrimp have posted a combined 17-31 (.354) record in games determined by two runs or fewer. Interestingly, Jacksonville lost their first 12 affairs decided by exactly two runs before winning their next six two-run games. The Jumbo Shrimp, though, have lost a pair of two-run contests in a row. Of Jacksonville's last 24 games heading into play on Saturday, 17 have been decided by two runs or fewer. The Jumbo Shrimp have won 10 of these 17 contests.

'PEN PALS

The Jumbo Shrimp bullpen finally saw their scoreless innings streak come to an end at 21 in the ninth inning on Friday at Mobile. That roll came right on the heels of a 14-frame scoreless streak that was snapped with an unearned run on Sunday. Thus, Jacksonville relievers went 36 frames in a row without yielding an earned run. Over the last 22 games, Jumbo Shrimp relief pitchers have tossed 78.1 innings with just eight runs, seven earned, for a 0.80 ERA. During this 22-game span, the Jumbo Shrimp's bullpen has collectively surrendered just 36 hits (4.1 H/9) while whiffing 85 (9.8 K/9) against 22 walks (2.5 BB/9). A big part of the success for Jacksonville relief pitchers has been their ability to retire first batters; on the season, the club's bullpen has retired 75 percent of first batters faced, several ticks above the baseball-wide average that hovers around 70 percent.

BABY YOU'RE A FIREWORK

Heading into play on Wednesday, Jacksonville's offense was scoring a meager 3.1 runs per game on the season. The Jumbo Shrimp promptly plated five runs in the first inning - one off their best in any frame this season - en route to an 11-run output, matching their total from April 24 at Biloxi for the most in any game this year. In Jacksonville's order, all eight starting position players reached base at least once, with six earning either multiple hits or multiple walks. Five Jumbo Shrimp compiled multiple base knocks on Thursday as Jacksonville scored six runs - the fourth time in the last five contests the club has scored at least six tallies. That said, the Jumbo Shrimp managed just two runs on three hits in a 4-2 Friday loss at Mobile.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE

Jacksonville infielder Joe Dunand came into play on June 9 with a dormant season batting line of .209/.275/.262. However, in the 23 games since then, the Miami native is for 25-for-85 at the plate, slashing a robust .294/.368/.424 with eight doubles, one home run, six RBIs and nine walks. A product of N.C. State, Dunand has dropped his strikeout percentage from 29.7 percent with Jacksonville in 2018 to 22.6 percent this year. However, in a not necessarily encouraging trend, his ground ball rate has shot up from 32.4 to 44.1 percent.

MILLER HIGH LIFE

Jacksonville outfielder Brian Miller has reached base at least once in 38 of his last 41 games, going 53-for-161 (.329/.383/.422) with 11 doubles, two triples, 14 RBIs and 13 walks during this span. On the season, the Raleigh, N.C., native ranks in a tie for fourth in the Southern League with 84 hits, tied for ninth in stolen bases with 14 and 10th in batting average at .287. A former North Carolina Tar Heel, Miller is pulling the ball at a career-high 47.0 percent clip while going the opposite way a career-low 22.3 percent of the time, the seventh-lowest such mark of the 134 Southern League hitters with at least 80 plate appearances on the year.

SHRIMP SKEWER

Jacksonville starter Jorge Guzman has posted a 5.71 ERA (11 ER in 17.1 innings) over his last three starts.
