Utah Flash News Release
ERIE, Pa., Feb. 9, 2009 - Darnell Jackson made the most of his one-day assignment from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Oliver Lafayette recorded a triple-double to lead the Erie BayHawks to a 101-89 NBA Development League victory over the Utah Flash Flash Monday at Tullio Arena.
Jackson, who converted 10-14 from the floor and scored 24 points in 26 minutes, is expected to rejoin the Cavaliers Tuesday in time for a visit to Indiana Pacers. The rookie from Kansas also grabbed six rebounds in his brief tenure in a BayHawks uniform. Lafayette had 12 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds.
The Flash dropped to 16-11 with the loss and dropped back into second place in the NBADL West Division, just percentage points behind the idle Idaho Stampede. Utah continues its eastern swing at Fort Wayne on Tuesday. Erie improved to 15-16 with the win and visits Iowa on Wednesday.
The Flash led by as many as 14 points in both the first and second quarters, but a dry spell of just over seven minutes without a field goal in the second period was what the BayHawks needed to get back in the game. Utah led 51-48 lead at the half, in spite of making just 6-of-21 field goals in the second quarter.
Erie came into the game leading the league in points allowed at 91.8 and flexed its defensive muscles after giving up 31 first-quarter points. The BayHawks allowed just 32 Flash points in the second and third quarters combined, forcing 10 Utah turnovers in the third period alone, to take a 78-63 lead after three quarters.
"We started out shooting the ball really well and built a couple of decent leads," Flash head coach Brad Jones said. "Erie turned up the defensive pressure after the first quarter and we didn't respond very well as 12 points and 10 turnovers in the third quarter attests."
Erik Daniels followed Jackson with 20 points and Ivan Harris chipped in 19 for Erie, who shot 50-percent (39-78) from the floor and outrebounded the Flash 40-32.
Boston Celtics assignee J.R. Giddens made 7-of-10 field goal attempts and scored 18 points to lead the Flash. Ronald Dupree followed with 12 and James Lang chipped in 11. Andre Ingram and Carlos Wheeler scored 10 each for Utah.
