Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Outfielder Brett Jackson and infielder Ryan Flaherty have both been promoted to the Iowa Cubs from Double-A Tennessee today in roster moves announced by Chicago. In a corresponding move, OF Ty Wright was sent to Tennessee.
Jackson, named as Chicago's top prospect by many sources including Baseball America and MLB.com, was the Cubs' first round draft pick (31st overall) in the 2009 First Year Player Draft. He reached Double-A in just his first full season of professional baseball and with today's promotion has reached the highest level in the minor leagues in his second full season.
A MLB Futures All-Star selection in 2010, Jackson hit .297 with 32 doubles, 14 triples, 12 home runs and 66 RBI between Daytona and Tennessee last season. Jackson started this year in Double-A and got off to a fast start. He was batting .295 with seven doubles, four home runs and 17 RBI in 32 games when he went down with a hand injury. After spending time on the disabled list, Jackson was slow to recover but battled back and was hitting .300 (12-for-40) in 10 games for the Smokies in July. The University of California, Berkeley graduate was also one of 12 Smokies to be named as a Southern League Mid-Season All-Star this year along with Flaherty.
Flaherty was selected by Chicago in the supplemental first round (41st overall) in the 2008 draft. Originally a shortstop out of Vanderbilt University, Flaherty has the ability to play all four infield positions with experience in the corner outfield as well. He was named a 2008 Northwest League Post-Season All-Star in his first season after hitting .297 with 19 doubles, eight home runs and 26 RBI in 56 games with short-season affiliate Boise. Flaherty played exclusively for Peoria in 2009 and split time between Daytona and Tennessee in 2010. In 82 games this season with Tennessee, Flaherty hit .301 with 20 doubles, 14 home runs and 66 RBI.
