Round Rock Express News Release

ARLINGTON, Texas - Left-handed pitcher Martin (mahr-TEEN) Perez was assigned to the Round Rock Express from Double-A Frisco, the Texas Rangers announced. Perez, 20, is expected to start Saturday's game at Memphis.

Widely considered the top prospect in the Rangers organization, Perez was 4-2 with a 3.16 ERA in 16 starts and one relief appearance this season. He tallied 83 strikeouts against 36 walks over 88.1 innings with a .245 opponents' batting average. Perez, who pitched in Major League Baseball's Futures Game earlier this week, tossed a weather-shortened, five-inning perfect game April 19 at Arkansas.

Perez, a native of Guanare Estado Portuquesa, Venezuela, began his professional career with short-season Spokane in 2008. He split the 2009 season between Class-A Hickory and Frisco, going 6-8 with a 2.90 ERA and 119 strikeouts over 114.2 innings between the two levels. Last season, Perez spent the entire season at Frisco and tallied 101 strikeouts over 99.2 innings.

With the addition of Perez, two of the five pitchers in Round Rock's rotation are under the age of 23. Right-hander Neil Ramirez turned 22 in May.
