Jackson Chourio Breaks Shuckers' Single-Season RBI Record in Loss

BILOXI, MS - Despite an 11-2 loss for the Biloxi Shuckers (60-56, 26-21) against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (65-50, 24-23) at MGM Park on Wednesday night, Jackson Chourio stole the spotlight with a two-run home run in the third, breaking the Shuckers' single-season RBI record on his 18th blast of the year.

The Blue Wahoos started the scoring with a run in the second off Shuckers' starter Tobias Myers, a solo home run from Cody Morissette. The Shuckers, however, responded with Chourio's blast in the bottom of the inning, taking a 2-1 lead. The home run brought in Chourio's 75th and 76th RBI of the year, breaking the previous franchise record of 74, set by Corey Ray in 2018. The home run also puts Chourio two away from becoming the first teenager with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a season in Double-A or Triple-A since Delmon Young in 2005.

The Blue Wahoos tied the game in the third with another solo blast, this time from Jacob Berry. They took the lead in the fifth with an RBI double from Berry. Berry's double was part of four straight RBI hits, including singles from Will Banfield and Paul McIntosh. Victor Mesa Jr. helped build the lead with a double during that stretch. With the bases loaded, Cody Morrissette brought in two with a single, extending the lead to 8-2. The Blue Wahoos tallied six in the inning and sent 10 to the plate.

In the seventh, Pensacola added on with a two-RBI single from, Norel González and an RBI groundout from Nasim Nuñez, extending the lead to 11-2. Shuckers' catcher Jason Lopez, making his first career pitching appearance, pitched a scoreless ninth, including a strikeout of Bennett Hostetler, the first batter he faced.

Myers (7-5) took the loss while M.D. Johnson earned the win after allowing two runs over six innings of work.

Righty TJ Shook is set to start for Biloxi on Thursday against lefty Patrick Monteverde, who leads all Double-A pitchers with a 2.43 ERA. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.
