Little Falls, NJ- The New Jersey Jackals' win streak ended at eight games, losing a tough one to the Bangor Lumberjacks, 2-1.
New Jersey managed to put up a run in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded, Jay LaFlair grounded into a fielder's choice, pushing across one.
Jackals ¬â¢ starter Aaron Myers would toss a no hitter going into the fifth. But with two outs, Mark Burke hit a solo homerun that not only broke up the no hitter, but also tied the ballgame at one.
Burke would hurt the Jackals once again in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, and Ryan Kane aboard second base, Burke doubled, scoring Kane, and giving the Lumberjacks their first lead of the game.
Matt Scheuing pitched seven and two thirds solid innings for the Lumberjacks. He gave up only one earned run on six hits, while walking two, and striking four. He was awarded the victory. Lance Calmus pitched a perfect ninth inning, while notching his seventh save of the season.
For the Jackals, Aaron Myers received a rough loss in eight innings of work. Myers scattered six hits, giving up two earned runs, on, while striking out two.
Chris Rowan was 2-4, for the Jackals.
Mark Burke went 2-3 with a homerun, a double, and two driven in.
New Jersey and Bangor play the final game of their three-game set on Wednesday, August 11, 2004. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Games can be heard on WPSC 88.7fm, and on the web at www.jackals.com. New Jersey Jackals' shortstop Chris Rowan eclipsed the team record for homeruns as a member of the ballclub, on Friday, August 7, 2004. Rowan hit hs 29th as a member of the Jackals, and 17th of the 2004 season, eclipsing Travis Bailey ¬â¢s record of 28.
On Tuesday, August 3, 2004, Jackals' starting pitcher Aaron Myers was named the Rawlings Northeast League Player of the Month. Myers went 4-1 in the month of July, with a 1.06 ERA. In 34 innings of work, Myers scattered 29 hits while striking out 38. Also during the month, Myers tossed a complete game, seven inning shutout of the Elmira Pioneers, in which he struck out eleven batters. At the time of the award, Myers was second in the Northeast League in strikeouts with 75.
The game scheduled between the New Jersey Jackals and the Elmira Pioneers on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, was suspended due to rain, entering the bottom of the third inning. New Jersey held a 3-0 lead over Elmira, partially due to a two-run homerun by Jay LaFlair. Because of the rain, the Elmira grounds crew worked till after the scheduled start time to get the field playable. The game did not get underway till after 9:00 p.m. The game will be continued on Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at 5:00 p.m., at Yogi Berra Stadium. The first game will begin in the bottom of the third, and will go a full nine innings. The second contest will be seven innings.
The New Jersey Jackals will be holding its 2nd annual NJ PETS Dog Days of Summer on Sunday, August 15, 2004, at Yogi Berra Stadium. It is an opportunity to bring your dog to the ballpark, participate in free giveaways, get portraits, and receive interesting literature on dog grooming provided by NJ PETS, Best Friend's Photography, and Mike's Feed Farm. The ballgame is scheduled to begin at 5:05 p.m., but those who arrive by 4:00 p.m. will have the opportunity to take their dog onto the field and participate in a pet tricks contest.
The Jackals will also be holding a blood drive at Yogi Berra Stadium, on Tuesday, August 17, 2004. A Bloodmobile will be located at the ballpark.
