North Shore Spirit News Release

Lynn, MA– In a back and forth affair Tuesday night, the North Shore Spirit outlasted the Elmira Pioneers 11-8 on Sovereign Bank Rally Towel Night at the New Fraser Field.

Klae Calvert (1-0) came out of the Spirit bullpen to pick up the win. Calvert pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits. Ryan Bicondoa pitched the ninth for his league-leading 18th save, and second in less than 24 hours.

North Shore jumped out to an early lead with three in the first. With one down, Nelson Teilon walked and advanced to third on a single by Vic Davilla. Frank Charles drove home Teilon with an RBI double into the rightfield corner. Joe Hastings followed with a run scoring single to left. The Spirit would make the score 3-0 on an RBI groundout by Brian Macchi.

After the Pioneers capitalized on some sloppy Spirit defense to tie the game at three, North Shore went back on top thanks to leadoff-man Lucas Taylor. With Tanner Wootan on third, Taylor sent a magestic fly-ball over the wall in right, for his first homerun of the season. With just two innings in the books, the Spirit held a slim 5-3 advantage.

The Spirit offense went to work again in the fourth. Wootan drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a basehit by Yuri Sanchez. After a Taylor sacrifice bunt, Teilon delivered a run-scoring single through the hole on the left-side of the infield. Davilla then gave North Shore a four-run cushion with an RBI groundout.

In the fifth, Elmira strung together four straight two-outs hits, scoring five times against Spirit starter Gary Bell. The inning was highlighted by a pair of two-run homeruns from Cleatus Davidson and Jason Bryan.

With the score tied 8-8 in the sixth, North Shore loaded the bases with one out. Leftfielder Joe Hastings stepped up and laced a shot into the gap in right-center, scoring three and putting the Spirit in front to stay.

Lucas Taylor finished the game 3-4 with a pair of runs scored. Joe Hastings had two hits and four RBI's. Tanner Wootan reached base four times and scored twice. The Spirit's second half record now stands at 14-8, good for third place in the North Division Standings.

LHP Bryan Morse (8-3, 2.41) takes the mound for the Spirit on Wednesday night and will face Elmira's Julio LaSalle (3-5, 3.18). Wednesday's game begins at 7:05 pm, gates open at 5:30 pm.

You can catch all Spirit games, home and away, on the flagship station of the North Shore Spirit, WESX 1230 AM. All games are also broadcast via the Internet on www.northshorespirit.com.
