Jacks Held by Miami FC in 0-0 Draw

September 23, 2020 - United Soccer League Championship (USL) - Charlotte Independence News Release

CHARLOTTE - The Charlotte Independence had everything but the winner Wednesday night at the Sportsplex at Matthews as they drew 0-0 against Miami FC. The Independence moves on to another Group G encounter where it will face Memphis 901 FC on Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Sportsplex at Matthews (7 p.m. ET on ESPN+).

With the draw, the Independence (7-3-4; 25 points), moved into a tie with Birmingham Legion FC (7-3-4; 25 points) atop the Group G standings, followed by North Carolina FC (4-7-1; 13 points) and Memphis 901 FC (2-7-4; 10 points).

In appreciation of current and former Military members and in an effort to honor all who serve, every player on the Independence roster wore a special Military Appreciation jerseys, presented by Famous Toastery. Fans can now bid on Independence players' game-worn, autographed jerseys with proceeds going to both American Legion and Operation Wake Surf. The auction will run through Saturday, Sept. 26 until 1:30 p.m. ET.

Mike Jeffries' lineup, to kick-off Military Appreciation Night, was similar to Saturday nights Group G match against North Carolina FC. With Dane Kelly suspended, Derek Gebhard took his place up front. The full XI: Brandon Miller, Jake Areman Duke Lacroix, Hugh Roberts, Aaron Maund, Clay Dimick, Junior Etou, Enzo Martinez, Luke Haakenson, Rey Ortiz, and Derek Gebhard.

The Independence came flying out of the gates at the Sportsplex at Matthews, with Hugh Roberts, Junior Etou and Derek Gebhard each coming close to an opener inside the first 20 minutes. The Independence managed to generate a few more quality looks but were unable to find the opener as both teams went into halftime deadlocked 0-0.

After a scoreless first half, the Independence again came out on the front foot, with the addition of Valentin Sabella, Christian Chaney, and Guido Vadala into the attack adding a spark as they fought for a winner. It seemed Sabella put the Jacks on top with a powerful long-range volley in the 62nd minute, only to have his shot rocket off the post for a throw-in.

From there it was a flurry of pressure and chances from Charlotte. Chaney nearly got on the board in stoppage time, heading a shot from the penalty shot into the hands of Miami FC 'keeper Mark Pais. The Jacks had a few more late chances before the final whistle but could not create a goal.

CLEAN SHEET: On the defensive end, Aaron Maund, Duke Lacroix, and Roberts put in a solid shift behind a relentless defensive midfield effort from Jake Areman, Clay Dimick, and Etou as well as captain Enzo Martinez to help goalkeeper Brandon Miller earn his fourth shutout of the season and 37th regular season shutout of his Championship career.

Next on the Schedule: Charlotte returns to Group G action Saturday, Sept. 26 against Memphis 901 FC at the Sportsplex at Matthews in Matthews, N.C. (7 p.m., ESPN+).
