Jacks 'Hammer' Out Deal

March 4, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Bangor Lumberjacks News Release

Bangor, ME- The Bangor Lumberjacks, proud members of the Northeast League, announced today that they have completed a deal with the Joliet Jackhammers of the Northern League that sends RHP Derek Santiago to the Jackhammers for RHP Kevin Orga, LHP Roger Kalinowski and OF Eddie Rivero.

The 25 year-old Orga tossed 66.0 innings for the Jackhammers last season, going 4-1 with a 3.55 ERA. A career independent player, Orga has gone 12-11 with a 3.87 ERA in 209.1 career innings pitched with 138 strikeouts. Kalinowski, a 6-4, 180 pound lefty split his rookie season between the Jackhammers and the Fargo-Moorhead (ND) RedHawks, collecting an 0-1 record with an ERA of 3.99 in 29.1 innings. The West Islip, NY resident struck out 15 last season.

"Kevin is a proven starter in the Northern League. I think he can bolster our starting rotation and whenever Kevin takes the mound, he's going to give us a chance to win," said Lumberjacks Manager Kash Beauchamp. "Kalinowski is a hard throwing lefty who I feel under the tutelage of Kevin Pincavitch has the potential to develop into a quality Northeast League reliever," Beauchamp continued. "All of the tools are there. He throws 88-90 miles an hour and hopefully can be someone who will come in and get a lefty out."

In Rivero, the Jacks get a left-handed power threat who in 7 seasons, has 94 career home runs and 352 career RBI's. Eddie was born and raised in Miami, FL and attended the University of Miami, where he was then drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 43rd round of the 1996 draft. Last season for the Sioux Falls (SD) Canaries of the Northern League, Rivero hit .248 with 13 home runs and 32 RBI's.

"Eddie has one of the best home runs to at bat ratio in the league over the last few years. Because of his being a school teacher, he will not be able to start the season with us, and will be placed on the inactive list," Beauchamp stated. "But he provides us with some left-handed power in reserve should we need it."

Santiago went 9-8 with a 4.38 ERA in 19 starts for the Adirondack (NY) Lumberjacks last season.

The Lumberjacks open the 2003 campaign on the road against the Allentown (PA) Ambassadors on Thursday, May 22, but return to Bangor for the home opener on Friday, May 30 at 7 PM against the New Jersey Jackals at Mahaney Diamond.
