Bangor Lumberjacks News Release

Bangor, ME- The Bangor Lumberjacks, proud members of the Northeast League, announced today that they have signed free agent slugger Lorenzo de la Cruz to a contract for the 2003 season.

De la Cruz, who won the 2002 Northern League East Most Valuable Player as a member of the Adirondack Lumberjacks, hit .367 (1st in league) with 15 home runs (4th in league) and 75 RBI's (1st in league). Lorenzo, a native of Santo Domingo, DR, also finished first in the league in hits (109), second in on-base percentage (.455), and second in slugging (.582).

"This is obviously a huge moment for the Bangor Lumberjacks. Lorenzo is one of the most feared hitters in Independent League baseball, as well as the current league MVP. To bring a player of this magnitude to the Bangor area should provide our fans and team many exciting moments. Not only is Lorenzo a quality player, he also brings the leadership qualities to our ball club that teams need from their veteran players," states Jacks Manager Kash Beauchamp.

De la Cruz is an 11 year veteran of minor league baseball, compiling a .293 career average with 164 home runs and 736 RBI's. The 31 year-old was also named a Northern League East All-Star for his 2002 performance. He is expected to fill the designated hitter role for the Lumberjacks this season.

The Lumberjacks open the 2003 campaign on the road against the Allentown (PA) Ambassadors on Thursday, May 22, but return to Bangor for the home opener on Friday, May 30 at 7 PM against the New Jersey Jackals at Mahaney Diamond.
