Odessa Jackalopes News Release

ODESSA - In the first game of a six-game homestand and the fifth of 12 scheduled meetings between the two teams this season, the Odessa Jackalopes fought hard, but came up short in a 4-3 loss to the Amarillo Bulls Friday at Ector County Coliseum. With the loss, the Jacks fell to 4-15-2 overall this season and with 10 points, remain alone in sixth place in the NAHL's South Division standings.

Odessa struck first Friday, when former Bull Matt Volonnino swatted a one-time transition centering feed from Jimmy Peplinksi past Amarillo goaltender Paul Berrafato for a 1-0 lead at the 7:31 mark of the opening frame. The Bulls answered in the second period, first tying the game, then taking a 2-1 lead on goals from Tyler Gernhofer and Tyler Deresky at 6:25 and 15:12, respectively.

On a peculiar, caroming wrister, the Jacks tied the game late in the second on Matt Montemurro's first goal of the season when the Glenview, Illinois native sent a fluttering point shot past Berrafato on feeds from Pat Thompson and Volonnino. It was a see-saw battle the rest of the way as Ryan Cole put the Bulls up 3-2 at 13:23, then Lawrence Cornellier unleashed a laser-like high-slot snapper to tie the game just two minutes later.

Despite a determined Odessa effort down the stretch, Amarillo sealed the win, their fifth in a row, late in the third, as Carter Penzein extended his now four-game goal streak at 17:32 to finalize the Bulls' 4-3 margin of victory. In his second consecutive start in net for Odessa, York, Pennsylvania native Phil Heinle was impressive for the Jacks, stopping 29 of the 33 shots he faced and in the process, falling to 0-2-0 on the season.

Next up for Odessa, it's the finale of a two-game weekend home series with Amarillo with the opening faceoff set for 7:05 pm Saturday at Ector County Coliseum.
