Amarillo Bulls News Release
ODESSA, TX - Carter Penzien scored the game winning goal with less than three minutes remaining in regulation time to lift the Amarillo Bulls past the Odessa Jackalopes 4-3 on Friday night at Ector County Coliseum in Odessa.
It was the Bulls 16th win of the season and fifth in a row. The Bulls are now tied for first in the South Division with Texas after the Tornado beat Topeka 3-2.
The game wasn't an easy one for the Bulls as they struggled in the first period, but got stronger as it moved along.
"At this time of the year you take wins as you can and build off of them," said Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams. "We faced a little adversity out there, and we're riding a lot of wins in this recent stretch. This was the hardest victory we have had in the last month, and give credit to Odessa as they played very well. Odessa didn't give up and neither did our guys."
It was a tough opening 20 minutes for the Amarillo Bulls as they struggled at times with play inside their own end. The Jackalopes converted a 2 on 1 break up the ice to take a 1-0 lead, but after that the Bulls settled down but couldn't scored on an extended five on three power play. The Jackalopes outshot the Bulls 11-8 in the first period.
The second period started better for the Bulls as they were able to tie the game on a shot from Tyler Gernhofer from Omar Mullan and TJ Sherman at the 6:25 mark. The Bulls took a 2-1 lead when Tyler Deresky slid the puck underneath Phil Heinle at 15:12. With less than two minutes remaining the period, the Jackalopes tied the game on a shot from the point. Shots in goal in the second period favored the Bulls 16-12.
All three goals in the final 20 minutes were scored in a four minute span. It started with Ryan Cole as he tipped home a shot from Brady Ferguson. After Odessa tied the game 3-3, it was up to the late heroics of Carter Penzien as has his low shot beat the goaltender Heinle.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Odessa Jackalopes 33-28 including 8-5 in the third period. There were six total power plays with the Bulls notching the lone goal.
The Bulls and the Jackalopes will conclude their weekend series tomorrow (Saturday) night at 7 pm at Ector County Coliseum. The Warm Up Show begins pre-game coverage at 6:45 pm on ESPN1440 and www.amarillobulls.com. Denis J. Puska has the exciting call at 7 pm.
