
JackHammers Pound out 17 Hits in 10-4 Rout

JOLIET, IL - Freddie Thon and Ryan Wehrle combined for six hits and seven runs batted in as the Joliet JackHammers (37-34) rebounded for a 10-4 win over the Schaumburg Flyers (28-44) Sunday afternoon at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers pounded out 17 hits in the victory, taking the finale to avoid the sweep.
Joliet started right out of the gates, loading the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the first. Josh Flores doubled with Jonathan Wyatt and Chris Colton reaching on a single and walk respectively. Jon Nelson dropped a single into right field to score the first run and Thon's sacrifice fly gave the JackHammers a 2-0 lead.
The JackHammers added eight more over the next five frames, scoring eight times against Ryan Gehring (3-7). Thon knocked in two more in the third with a two run home run and Wehrle collected an RBI single for the five run cushion after three innings.
Todd Privett (7-4) earned his team leading seventh victory, going seven innings. The southpaw allowed three runs (two earned) in the seventh before departing. Privett allowed eight hits and struck out four without surrendering a walk.
Wehrle was back at it in the fifth, knocking home two more runs with a double. Kevin Rios followed with a double and gave Joliet an 8-0 advantage.
Colton and Thon ended the JackHammer scoring in the sixth, picking up run scoring singles and extending the lead to ten.
The Flyers ended the shutout bid in the seventh, scoring three runs on two Joliet errors. Chris Schultz put Schaumburg on the board with a single after Richard Mercado doubled.
Gehring took the loss, lasting four innings allowing eight runs on 13 hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Nelson, Wehrle and Thon each had three hits with Thon driving home a game high four runs. Colton and Wyatt each contributed two hits as nine of the ten JackHammers with an at-bat collected at least one hit.
The JackHammers are off tomorrow before returning to action Tuesday night in a doubleheader at Rockford. Rory Shortell (2-5) and Michael Rocco (2-1) will get the start for Joliet opposite Kyle Wright (5-2) and Mike Wood (2-5). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. with a 5:55 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
