Flyers Can't Complete Sweep of JackHammers

JOLIET, IL - The Joliet Jackhammers (37-34) offense finally showed up in the final game of the series as they defeated the Flyers (28-44) 10-4 at Silver Cross Field Sunday afternoon.

Joliet puts runs on the board with regularity and began the onslaught with two runs in the bottom of the first. Then in the third, Freddie Thon launched his ninth home run of the season with a two run shot. After Roberto Mena tripled, Ryan Wehrle brought Mena in on a base hit, pushing the Jackhammers lead to 5-0.

Wehrle racked up a two run double in the fifth and, a batter later, Kevin Rios notched a two bagger to plate Wehrle.

Schaumburg starter Ryan Gehring (3-7) was charged with eight runs on 13 hits in five innings of work and left trailing 8-0. The lefty was tagged with the loss.

The Flyers bats woke up in the top of the seventh when Richard Mercado doubled to deep center and Chris Schultz brought Mercado in with a single. Tommy Fitzgerald and Ruddy Yan both singled, scoring Schultz. By the end of the frame, Schaumburg had cut the lead to 10-3.

The win went to Jackhammers starter Todd Privett (7-4). The righty tossed seven strong innings, allowing just three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

The Flyers open up a four game set with the Lake County Fielders back home at Alexian Field Monday evening. Dustin Glant will take the hill for Schaumburg opposite Lake County's Alec Lewis.
